Winter Wheels

I've located a set of refurbished BMW wheels that the vendor says will fit my Z4. I have asked for more details on their specs and will post as soon as I receive it. I need some assistance in determining if they will fit properly. My main concern is the offset. Just received a picture, trying to get offset numbers. Anyone know the style number of this wheel?

looks like style 138

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...73&hg=36&fg=15

what i did was i kept the 293's but with winter tires and in the spring i'll get the 313 with summer tires. that way it looks good year round and not retarded with little 17" wheels.

These have an offset of 20, vice the same size "290" wheels recommended for the Z4 of 29, so double check for any interference between the tire and the suspension/wheel well before you put down money

With the exception of Mud Flaps, I do not think it is possible for a Z4 to look "retarded", this is borderline Blasphemy

As I will only be running winter tires for about 3 months and probably not a lot of driving I am not too concerned with looks. A set of decent 17" tires is considerably cheaper than 18s as well.

So, am I to understand that if these wheels are a 20 offset they should be OK? Since my car is an s30i, the size of the brakes should not be a problem, correct?

assuming that the new set is the same all around (7,5x17 225/50R17)
they'll fit and they will have 15mm MORE clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 3mm in the front and 33mm MORE clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 7mm in the rear.

Sounds like this should work fine. Thanks.

Added: 5:45 pm, Vendor just replied and said wheels weigh 27 lbs and the offset is 43 mm. I don't think these will work, will they? Perhaps I'll just leave the Z garaged during bad weather.

Here is their answer when I questioned the offset: "Being these rims are 7.5" in width, the offset of 43mm should be fine. The normal size is 8" with a 47mm offset."

Bump to see if anyone can review the offsets and let me know if these will work. Vendor is too far away to have them test fitted so I need to know if they will work with my car and 225-45-17 tires. Thanks.

hold on,

the specs for the #138 are:
7,5x17 - 225/50R17 - ET 20
7,5x17 - 225/50R17 - ET 43

is he telling you something different??

your current wheels are #294:

8x18 - 225/40R18 - ET 29
8,5x18 - 255/35R18 - ET 40

Vendor is saying all 4 wheels are the same; 17 x 7.5, offset 43. If I buy them as winter wheels I will put 225-45-17 tires all around.

I think I'll just try to sell my RFTs and put a nice set of all season tires on the car as I did with my 335. It gets too cold in western MD to use the summer tires all year round but in a normal winter we don't get much snow. This year has been unusual to say the least. We have over 3 feet of snow on the ground right now.

oh, ok. so in that case the rears will be the same specs i provided before but the fronts will be 8mm LESS clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will RETRACT 20mm.

i know about the snow, here in CT i have maybe 4-6", but i was watching how you guys in MD and DC got hit hard.

Hey Randall,
I've been happy with my setup:

Have you checked out Tirerack?

Thanks. I'm leaning toward ditching the RFTs and installing a set of Continental DWS tires so I can use them all year. Normally, we don't get much snow that stays on the road and if it does I'll drive my R32.

I even need winter wheels today in Texas - we had 12 inches of snow yesterday, which is an all time record for this area

Yes, I saw that DFW airport set a record for snowfall in a single day.
