Well i guess it depends on what you consider a base model then. My interpretation is a vehicle that has the standard package that all vehicles have. So i suppose that things like m suspension, idrive, heated seats and other comfort amenities would then be considered an upgraded model. I woudl also consider the 3.0 and the 3.5 different variations of the same platform. I guess if you look at at the engine trns package 3.5/DCT as options then it would be a bit higher on the totem pole than the 3.0/steptronic. I am ok with that but I would never call a 3.0 a base model.

I mean would you call an Ferrari F30 a base model even if it were the cheapest version of that car? Certainly not right? No I am not comparing our cars to the Supercar but the arguement still holds true doesnt its?

Next I guess one would say that my 1 is a girls car right?

I don't think "base model" is derogatory in any way, it is just a statement of fact about the least expensive way to get a certain model in a certain market, exactly how you said the 35i/35is/DCT is an option instead of 30i/steptronic for the E89

I certainly would call Carrera the "base model" 991 even though it costs much more than my car

I have heard of the 135 referred to as girls' car, same as Z435 is hairdresser car... that's just dirt on the shoulder man (can I brush it off for ya?)

My car is slow and I hate it. Death to the 30i and 28i! I'm kidding, but actually, I see more modded 335is than I see 328is. I also see HEAVILY modded M3s, which is really just a fancy 3 series, right?! (;

I took no offense, I just have a hard time wrapping my head around base model vs non in this case.

Well, he's right. The 30i and 28i are base models. That's just how it is. I don't think he meant to be insulting, that's just the only way to describe it. He could have said "lesser model" which would have actually been insulting, even though it's true. The Gallardo is Lamborghinis "base car", but it's still a monster!

I agree with everything you said up till the Gallardo example. I wouldn't use the word "base" in that way. Gallardo would be Lamborghini's entry level car, while the Gallardo LP 550-2 is the base model of the Gallardo.

Humor me this, rking. Then under your definition, wouldn't a 35is with no extra options (even though it pretty much has every option standard) be a "base" car then? Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way insulting your car or your opinion of the definition of "base" in regards to a car, I've just never heard it been used the way you use it so interested in hearing what you have to say.

Maybe that was the wrong example. Here you go. The base LP560 (it's 560hp for the 2013 model, right? )is a good car. The Super Trofeo however, is even better. Either way, it's a Gallardo!

You could be right on the 560, but the point I was trying to make is I would only use the word "base" within model not within brand. Within brand I think it is more commonly referred to as "entry level"

Love the black Z, BUT the wheels have to go.
The yellow on yellow ZED works for me. Love it.

Guys, I need some opinion... I painted my car Lambo Green

Edit: Damn, I took the door jam color thinking it would be more representative. Now it looks too bright. Hmm

The way is see it 28i < 30i < 35i < 35is, with the 28i now being the entry level or base model E89 Z4, replacing the 30i as the entry level offering before the turbo 4 cylinder 28i was introduced

With each model variant there are options above the standard features included in the base configuration for each model. All great cars in their own right- with the ability for each of us to fine tune our ride to our taste- light on "amenities" and high on performance-based options, a mix of both or loaded up on everything, all for a price of course

That actually looks really awesome.

I personally would not do that color without a power to weight ratio in the 6lb / hp range but that is pretty viable for the Z since it is styled to look "super" in the first place.

Also, FWIW, if I was going to do custom bright color I would take the bright pumpkin orange instead

Hmmm, No, see I don't see either of these vehicles as base models. The reason is simply because they come with too many options to justify such a term. Entry level? well maybe but maybe even that isn't a correct term if one has no desire to have a 3.5 or other option. Now if they come out with a TRUE ///M then I am all in but the last ///M roadster/coupe was in 2008. Those were nice vehicles too.

When I think of base model I think of this.

Steel wheels, no A/C, crank windows, air bags in steering wheel and passenger dash only, no radio, cloth seats etc.

Again I am taking no offense to any of these discussions as I do see your points and the y do have validity I guess but this is I guess a brain issue on my part not yours. This picture kinda covers it.

Yeah, but that side of the forum is also where all the 328s debadge because it "looks clean" (it does, but that's not the point) and more than one person has ///M badges cause "it has the M-Sport package."

I'd like to think we are more mature on this side of bimmerpost. But then again...
