Saw this on eBay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1-Own...t_43788wt_1167

Why do people do this to their cars? It doesn't make them "unique" or "different," it just screams very poor taste and a desire to be noticed. And these revolutionary vehicles always tend to be the base models, like the 30i in thiscase. Seen a couple of cars like this on fleebay as well (you guessed it, all of them which were 30i's)

Sorry, I was bored and felt like ranting, and thought I'd share the link to maybe further promote some imaginative minds.
Then again, I have a bright yellow Z, I am in no position to speak.

Other than the wheels, which can be rescued with a couple cans of plastidip, the rest of the car is well-optioned imo

Yeah, the red wheels are pretty hideous, but if that car was priced to sell, all you have to to is buy it and swap out the wheels, or paint them black like so many are doing.

It isn't my taste, but I can see how some would like to carry the color scheme of the car further. Sort of like painting the roll hoops body color or vinyl wrapping the roof.

Also, if only the spokes were painted red (and with a good glossy clear coat) it might actually have looked ok

How about cars with replica (aka knockoff) wheels (j/k j/k.. your car looks awesome... just kidding around and also playing devil's advocate)

It's not my taste but doesn't look that bad. It could've been riced out a LOT worse.

While I do agree that the mod that I am against (the red wheels) is very minor and can easily be fixed, I just don't see why someone would do that in the first place. I think the original intentions of extending the color scheme is very thoughtful and can work, maybe just a red lip, but full on red is just tacky to me and doesn't seem to fit with those wheels. The spokes are too thick and there is just way too much red going on. If I were to do red, maybe something like this would work better, different style wheels with smaller spokes,

Not much else to say, just thought I'd share because it's not everyday you see such a peculiar Z. If I saw that car drive by, I would definitely give it a second (or third) look, that's for sure.

In terms of replicas, I think you do have a good point Nick. I am running M3 knock-offs on my not even 3 series. I am sure the argument can be made about me being a poser and trying to grab attention to my non-M car. Maybe I'm just not bold enough to run full-on yellow wheels and my jealousy is showing through, hmmm

They glow in the dark too!

i am not that critical with the change. While i woudnt do red, i did go satin black. it makes you look at the car more and not the rims that take your attention away from the car itself. AND by the way there is nothing wrong with the 3.0i. Some of us chose that model because we didnt want the headache of the turbo and HPFP issues that are prevalent in the 3.5 models. Once they have these fixed for sure maybe my next one will be. Or maybe not I still like looking at the old BMW 8 Series. I have contemplated buying one for a couple years now. Just waiting for the right one at the right price.

FYI - HPFP issue is a thing of the past, going on 2 years now. There's nothing wrong with the 30i at all. I drove both before buying and it was hard not to fall in love with the additional power of the 35i. To each his own.

I've seen plenty of 35is that are getting this treatment as well.

I'm just teasing dude... A good quality replica is a lot better than spacers in my opinion. And I am about to put on your old style 325 wheels (when I get them from the fedex store) with the little m stickers on my non m sport package car

For what it is worth, if that E89 in your first post was a gallardo or even a GT3 I would drive it around FOR SURE. just need an appropriate level of bling for a color scheme that bold

I am too lazy to do anything to mine. But way happier to see an customized z4 than same stock white 30i like mine while driving mine. I kinda feel you would call BMW art car ugly until you realize it is "official" then everything is good.

Two things I wanted to note. In my original post, I said that they all seem to be 30i's. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 30i and it was not an attack at 30i owners at all. Actually, I'm sure some prefer it because it is N/A. The point I was trying to make was (here comes a big generalization from me) people who have far-fetched mods usually have the base model because from my speculations either 1) it's cheaper and they want to spend the money elsewhere (red wheels) 2) young consumers who aren't able to financially pony up the difference or 3) they think no one will know the difference so they get the cheapest one for all-show. Kind of like a-hole drivers who almost always undoubtedly has the base model because "it's a BMW." Anyway, OT.

In regards to it being ugly because it is not "BMW Official," I think the problem here is that something like a Lamborghini or any super exotic inherently comes with that bling-bling attention factor. A BMW, even the Z, just doesn't have what it takes to pull off something so bold IMO, and it just comes off as overly showy (it's OK for an Aventador to show off, well, because it's an Aventador )

Nick - No worries, I knew you were kidding. It's all part of the fun and games.

1) Nope not a base model
2) Nope again unless u call mid 40s young (Ill take that)
3) Nope I purposely bought the 3.0i as for in that year the 3.5 had HPFP issues as the engine package was adapted from the 335i with only software changes really.

The reason i painted my rims was because i do like being different from everyone else. If i had bought a 3.5 i would have done the same (plus i would have swapped the cat back for true duals out the rear. a single pipe on each side isnt my thing.) I have done a few mods to mine all subtle so far.

1) stubby antenna painted Orion Silber
2) painted wheels
3) blackened out the chrome kidneys
4) hardwire radar detector
5) LED backlit grill
6) LED Angel Eye Retrofit

Here is a photo i subbed to the photo of the month contest

Car looks good Don't think I've seen an Orion Silver (looks to be that color?) with black wheels! It actually works contrary to my belief before having seen it. On top of that, red seats! Must be the only one produced.

Also, in regards to my 3 "assumptions," I wasn't referring to aesthetic mods in general (like your black wheels) more so the very far-fetched mods, like red wheels or highly modified body kits (think Rowen)
