Oil contamination in cooant reservoir.

Took my 35i to an independent shop today to have it inspected in preparation for it going out of factory warranty. The idea being to find any problems lurking that the dealer can take care of prior to warranty expiring. The most interesting (and unexpected) thing they found was engine oil in the coolant expansion tank (and, presumably, in the rest of the cooling system) that they believe is probably due to gasket failure in the housing that sits directly in front of the oil filter. Apparently both oil and coolant run through this housing via attached hoses and only the gasket in question separates the flows internally and prevents them from mixing. No coolant evident in the oil, but oil definitely present in the coolant tank. Anyone had this happen to their car?

I saw a YouTube video where they were changing the gaskets on the oil filter housing and oil cooler. When I saw it I was wondering if the same thing after seeing how close they are and on the same aluminum cast part. The are super close. Like an inch or so away from each other and utilize the same gasket. Yikes right? If you wanna see the video I'll pull it up. But it definitely seems possible.

If you can find it, that would be great!

Here is the link of the replacement. You can see when how close everything is on the block and how it could happen. Sorry it's not the exact same car but same motor and block.

Yes this happens.

Replace both ofh gaskets and have the coolant system professionally flushed.

Thanks for the video dblaron30i. That's clearly the same problem my car has and I've scheduled it for repair next week at the dealer along with three other issues that turned up in the independent shop's inspection. BTW, I highly recommend anyone approaching end of factory warranty and not anticipating going the extended warranty route to have this done by a shop you trust. There's no way in hell I would have stumbled onto this and the other problems lurking deep in the bowels of this car prior to warranty expiration on 2/28/17. The shop charged me $135 which is credited to my first service appointment with them. Money well spent!
