Rear Main Seal Leak!!!!

Bad news! I just found out the my 2009 Sdrive35i Z4 with only 5k miles has a rear main seal leak! I pulled my car out of the garage on Tuesday and noticed a good size puddle of black oil on the ground! So, looks like they are going to pull the transmission to fix the problem. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue. From what I was told, this issue is very rare. I will give an update as soon as I get more info! Lets hope this in just a rare case!

Leak! That's the common problem for Jap cars but not German. Please update your findings. Cheers.

Unfortunately, the oil looked really dark. I was really surprised to see how dirty the oil was. Hopefully, there is nothing else wrong with the engine or transmission.

Has the dealer diagnosed it as a engine rear main seal leak?

It's kinda strange that engine oil would be that dark after 5k miles.

The dealer did diagnose the leak as the engine rear main seal. I am trying to get info from the dealer as to why the oil is so dark, given that the engine only has about 5k.

I am pretty upset! After only have the car for a month, it went in the shop because the A/C unit was faulty. Turned out the control unit was on national back order and it took almost two weeks to receive the unit from Germany. Then while they installed the new unit all the relays in the instrument cluster failed and that unit was on international back order. It took just shy of a month and about 12 phone call to BMW USA to get my car fixed.

On top of all of this there are other issues with the car they have to contend with aside from the leak! The steering rack clicks when backing up with the wheel turned hard over to the right, roof creaks, left rear spring pops when backing out of driveways, the radio volume shoots up and down for no reason (I have tried turning the speed volume up and down), center armrest creaks like crazy, and the windows malfunction after you put the top up (Using the master switch the windows go up all the way, then instantly go down about half way).

So, I guess you could say I am a little more than frustrated with this car! You would expect a lot more from a $60k plus car.

Sounds like that thing was wrecked and put back together. I wonder if he bought Vintage's old car?

I bought this car new with about 15 miles on the odometer. I have owned an S2000 and 2003 Mustang Cobra Convertible, and neither of these had any major issues. Yes, even the Ford. Before this Z4 I owned a 2007 335i Coupe and a 2007 750li. Neither of these cars gave me any trouble either, so this is why I am scratching my head at this point. When and if they finish my car I will try to scan a copy of the list of repairs for all to see. I might even try to get a pic of the trans out of the car.

I think you could get a buy back or a trade at this point.

Yes, why not. Either get your money back or give you a new car.
