Arrow BMW werkstestwagen camouflage ... this is how BMW disguises their prototypes

Ever wonder how BMW installs the camo on their test cars? Wonder no more...

Why would they need to camo a 5GT? Just putting the BMW roundel on it is camouflage enough. No one is going to guess thats a real BMW.

I wonder how many little kids have ever put screws in their daddy's BMW?

Seems like a lot of extra work - and some weight at well - I wonder if that plays into the metrics and data that is collected while testing?

Wow. That's a lot of work. Wouldn't double sided tape or a sloppy vinyl wrap have done the trick? Leave it to the Germans to over engineer anything.

I see manufacturers and wide-body enthusiasts seem to go through the same process to hide the effort of the designers .

I'm thinking htis is for very early prototyping. Its probably why later in the game you typically see cars wrapped in the black/white camo (vinyl). The engineering and marketing buildup towards releasing a new model go hand in hand.

Yes they do not do this now preferring full camouflage wraps with vacuumed formed sheets attached to the body to disguise the lines.
The camouflage affects cooling , aerodynamics etc so when testing at night everything has to be removed. But using camouflage wraps are more cost effective and less of a hindrance than removing and attaching false panelling like before.

Yes, this video is an old video, but still very interesting.

And yeah... BMW has been using (swirly)wraps for awhile now... but I understand what is brand new(from my sources), is that BMW AG are now using a special swirl paint/camo on the latest werkstestwagens. No more wrap jobs! This new way of painting the swirly pattern is quite cool.
