Why do I have to pull door handle twice to get out of 328?

auto-lock is enabled... disable it.
one pull = unlock
second pull = door mechanism

This is common to every BMW I've ever had. It's just the way BMW does things. Extra measure of safety if you will.

I have a '96 328i and it doesn't do this.

So I can't change this? What is the purpose? After I stop the car, why do I need to pull the handle twice to exit?

It is tied to the auto door lock between 12-15 mph. Disable this feature and you will only have to pull once. I assume you are willing to give up safety feature of auto door lock!

its in the newer cars.. if the cars locked u have to pull twice.. as said before, pull once unlocks then the second opens the door

I actually like it. I love the different solutions the e46 had built into it. I also miss the window triggers being in the middle console.

It's like this on all the Audi, VWs, MINIs, and VWs I've owned (all 2002+), I figured it was just a European thing.

Like others said the first pull unlocks, the second opens. It's not "tied" into the auto-lock, it's just the auto-lock locks the door, necessitating an unlock to open it. Same behavior if you manually lock the doors.

OK, so why can't they make an auto-lock feature without requiring two pulls to open the door? Why not make it to where pulling the lever once unlocks the door and opens it.

I want my door to auto-lock.

That doesn't mean I want to pull the lever twice to get out.

If I am willing to live w/o the autolock, can it be disabled? I can't find this in the manual.

Separate question, I don't have the Comfort Access package. Does this mean that the seating positions for myself and wife are accessed only by the memory switches 1 and 2 or does the ability to sense which key is in the car still work?

Not me. I always hated when I had to drive a car that had the window switches on the center console. That's just wrong.

I asked my salesperson that question. He said it is a safety feature. It is like clicking 'Delete' on your computer which responds 'Are you sure?'.

I guess. He did say that the shop could customize the locking to do what I want. Sure enough, I am driving a loaner while they fix a couple minor issues with my new (new to me, about a year old in reality) 328 and the loaner does not have the doors autolock. Strange.

You can also code the vehicle for then car is shut off it automatically unlocks the doors.

I installed the remotekey+ which unlocks the doors when the ignition is switched off.
