Angry Z4 Accident

Well, it happened again to my iS. Today, during the rainstorm, I went a little too fast on the highway, hit a rain puddle and lost control of the car. The little Z careened down the highway, hitting the center divider, then the van in the adjacent lane before perfectly settling on the shoulder. I've uploaded some of the pics for your entertainment.

Anyways, since then, I have already had the car towed to the repair shop to begin the lengthy process of returning the car back into shape (it's worth noting that there seem to be no mechanical issues since I was able to turn on/off the car and drive it slowly to the exist and onboard the tow bed). Repair cost estimate, based on exterior appearance only ~$15-20k (insurance is going to hate me even more for this, which is saying something)

Since I won't have the car for a while, I thought about seizing the opportunity to have a few upgrades done -- and this is where I will need some of your input.

1) Upgrading the headlights to post-LCI (2014 YM). Will they fit/work without any modifications ? If so, I will have the shop order those and I'll pay the difference, since I hate the yellow halos so much.

2) Upgrading front/rear bumper to widebody versions. Any suggestions of kits sold locally in CA that will fit ? Not looking for something from China, as they suffer from fitment issues often, and take a long time to arrive.

All other suggestions of things to do are welcomed here. The repair will likely be done by February as is.

Damn that sucks... At least it wasn't more serious and was only bent metal/plastic.

There should be a thread on here about the headlight swap.

I would recommend sticking with oem bumpers, and oem black grills.

Side note, did your car come with the summer tires? I noticed that under 50 degrees they have no grip at all. I wonder if tires had some involvement with the spin out.

Either way glad to see you are ok.

Well the OP lists his location as San Francisco, where it rarely gets much below 50 even in the winter.

It's white. A good body shop and you'll never know the difference. Maybe M-sport bumper cover. That car is getting more parts than you think, IMHO.

I saw that, but I also remember friends telling me that SF does get a bit chilly.

Update

Well, time for an update.

So, today, the car was finally put on a lift for inspection by the insurance adjuster and the body shop to look at the full extent of the damage. It is looking very close to total loss so far, with the final decision being made tomorrow.

Prelim report shows that the estimate is at around $25k so far, with the bulk of it stemming from one of the rails being bent, the full suspension requiring replacement, all 4 wheels needing to be re-machined, and then you have the front/rear bumper as well as both headlights, hood and one of the quarter panel needing paint. I am definitely neglecting to mention some of the less prominent interior parts right as well.

fmorelli, you spoke very correctly when you said this car will need more parts than is obvious.

And with respect to traction during rain, I have the PSS tires on and grip wasn't an issue at all in the rain, unless I am pushing it with traction control off. However, it seems like lower cars can't handle rain puddles at higher velocities without losing control. Lesson learned, at a steep price.

I hope that they decide not to declare it a total loss and just fix it. I will post an update tomorrow when I get the final verdict.

I understand you are wanting to explain why you crashed. But it seems you are trying to blame everythi g but yourself. That's not good.

You crashed because you were driving too fast for the conditions. Just like on a snowy winter day on the highway most of the vehicles you see in the ditches are the 4x4s.

You crashed your car. Accept that and learn from it.

Ugh.. Just read what I wrote. The tone is worse than my intentions.

You said you were driving too fast. This will make you more cautious for sure. Glad you are Ok and only have to deal with the car.

I readily admit that I was really speeding, and subconsciously dodging responsibility in my last thread. Thanks for the insight.

Called adjuster just now; she is in contact with an evaulator and will have a final say by the end of the day it appears. Will update.

We all have our sideways. I bought my Z4, yellow of all colors. First time I drove it, someone hit the left corner of the front bumper in a reasonably unpopulated parking lot. Then third time I drove it, guy in a Honda Pilot backed into the bumper and headlight. THE CAR IS YELLOW! Clearly my problem was bad juu-juu or owning such a highly visible car :-D

Well, it was declared a total loss. Time to get an evaluation and punt this one, and get yet another Z4....

Anyone know what kind of wheels it has ? those are not the stock 295 wheels. I can't figure out what type for the evaluation purposes
