good question. My service advisor did mentioned about a software upgrade when my car was in for a gearbox replacement last week. wondering what difference it made..

my advisor did reset the gear box too, he told me the way posted to on this forum doesnt work.

he reset the adaptive learning too.
The software update i noticed changed some icons in the navigation and added some features in the telephone like conference button and some more.

I think the bavarian technic tool can reset adaptations via the PC software.

Are software updates performed automatically when you car is in for service or do you have to ask? My car is running perfectly but if the update is to improve something like the NAV, I would want it to be installed.

They do an update if it is required for a part that has been installed or if there is a service done and the update is requested by BMW. Otherwise you pay, $135 for mine so I could get the Dinan installed .

There's an update that makes the ECO interface compatible with non-BMW electronic test machines. Required by recent regulation (as I understand it). Does nothing to drivability, functionality, etc.

Having a Dinan tune, I refused it - don't want to drive to Tampa to reinstall the Dinan software.

My dealer is really close (3 kms away) but the parent dealership that has the Dinan is across town about 30 minutes drive so I have to go there for anything other than oil etc......
