Received my LCI side markers from Husker BMW today. Put them on the car. They look better in real life than anticipated. Soon the white blobs will be gone from the of the car forever.

Now to decide to wrap, or not to wrap and install as is. More to follow.

Herr K, I'm looking forward to see what you do with these. I have a red Z4 too. I'm thinking either leave the chrome as is or matching the finish to that of the wheels, as the OP did. somehow matching to the paint doesn't do it for me.

Make that 3 of us including Jparnes.... I too have a Red Z... Called up Husker today to check the status of my parts and they are waiting for the left markers to arrive .

Can't wait to put them on..... though I am not going to wrap them as everything on my car is stock.

Do share the pics once done.

Completed the side LCI sidemarker upgrade today. Considered the following;

1. Paint to match wheels - with a satin finish clear coat (too bland, no texture, nothing special, might as well leave them chrome - against red anyway IMO).
2. Brushed Aluminum wrap (too light)
3. Graphite colored carbon fiber wrap (a close 2nd - but seemed out of place)
4. Brushed Titanium wrap.

Used the old side marker as a test mule for different options and final selection.

Decided on the 3M "Brushed Titanium" Wrap. It is a shade or two darker than the wheels when they are clean and dust free, but it has a hint of metallic glitter to match the metallic glitter in the 296 wheel paint. Goes with my "Brushed Alum" interior trim. I like that it has a satinish finish, yet you can see the fau brush marks. Easy stuff to work with and the look is amazing. It's as close to looking like a piece of metal as possible and I'm not one to settle for close.

The LED light housing removal, from the chrome plastic housing, is a bit of a challenge. For anyone considering this or painting - you need 2 or 3 mini screw drivers (jewelers set is good) and about 3 hands. Lots of patience to not break the tabs retaining the light module. I'll take some disassembly photos when I do the left side.

So at a later date if that light bulb needs to be changed, do you have to prise that double stick tape off to get to it, or can it be accessed from the inside?

The LED's are part of the assembly. Not replaceable - neither are the LED's in the pre LCI units. You throw the assembly away and replace with a new one. Removal of the sticky tape is just like debadging or removing/replacing the other labels (Z4 on the trunck lid or SDrive on the fenders) I use floss.

Tommy like. Nicely done. I have deep sea blue. I wonder whether that titanium or a lighter silver would look better.

Did you consider cutting and tucking the film into the recess around the LED's instead of disassembly?

I am no film application expert, in fact this was my first use of the product. So I thought I would give myself the best opportunity for success by removing the light package. Also the light clipc in over the rear facing part of the chrome surround, so it looked difficult to get a good trim/fit.

The second one was much easier to disassemble, once I learned the technique. Will provide a brief LED removal DIY later.

[QUOTE=HerrK;13900576]The old ones are held in by a plastic stepped clip. You can access it with a long skinney straight blade screw driver, under the hood, above and in front of the side marker.

Push gently on the tan colored tap in the center of the photo and the side marker pops out.

So when you say "push on the tap" I assume you mean to push outward, towards the fender, not push towards the back of the car. Yes?

Just push on the tab and the indicator pops out or pull gently on it. I broke the rear clip on the old indicator as I pushed too hard so you only need to push with the screwdiver gently.

Mainly push towards the rear of the car with a little force towards the outside. So back and out, it is a stepped clip, the steps are towards the front of the car, so it wedges in tight when installed.

To remove the LED assy from the LCI sidemarkers - looking at the assembly you'll note there are three clips and one slip in retainer. The key is to unclip the clip that is closest to the front of the car. In the following photo #1 that is the one with the screwdriver on the left.

To unclip the LED assembly you use three small flat bade screw drivers.

1. Insert a screw driver #1 approximately where the red handled one is shown.
2. Insert one screwdriver #2 through the chrome loop and gently pry the black U clip up.
3. With screwdriver #3 (not shown) pry open the gap at the top of the crome loop and black U clip.
4. As the U clip unlactches from the chrome loop. It will barely unlatch as the other two clips are still retaining the LED assembly, pry up with screwdriver #2.
5. Now take screwdriver #3 and work the 2 remaining latches open. Always keep some upward pressure on Screwdriver #2 to prevent it from relatching.
6 Once all the latches are unclipped slide and lift the LED assembly towards what would be the front of the car to release it from slip in retainer.

Photo #2 shows the LED assembly being held up with all clips released - ready to lift and slide out.

It is a bit of a pain and requires patience. Once you get the first one disassembled, the second one will seem alot easier, at least it was for me. Installation of the LED assembly is slip in and push down.
