USB audio query

Hi folks

I'm sure this will be posted somewhere but I cannot find any solid info on 2014 cars.

I have bought a e89 20i m sport yesterday, uk spec. Only additional options are heated seats and the 19's. This leads me to believe I have NH6 only, which should be bluetooth phoning, with USB audio?.

I asked very specifically if it would work with an iPhone 5 via USB. He confirmed and I received a USB cable as a gift. I was expecting the cable to be USB only, but the cable is a oem y cable with 8 pin apple connector.

Ok I thought...

However when I plug this cable in to the USB socket and phone, I get nothing but charging. USB option on the audio options simply says insert USB. Original apple cable by itself without the audio jack also does this.

Does this need looking at, or have I been given a cable for a phone/vehicle which could not use it?. Although that would then beg the question if why is the USB port there.

Cheers

Typically, I think you are supposed to plug in both ends of the "Y" cable at the same time. Which means both the USB side and the Aux side plugged in together while the phone is also plugged in at the same time for you to get audio. Thats how it works on my car at least,

My apologies as I should have been more clear. When using the provided oem iPhone 5 8 pin y cable, I am connecting both jack and USB, not just USB. I don't think the radio is even getting to point where it sees the phone, let alone play audio.

As an update however, I have tested it with just aux jack which works (obviously minus the steering wheel functions) and also a USB drive in the USB port, which again works perfectly fine. Only when trying to connect a iphone 5 do I seem to be suffering.

Do you have Idrive? Because you have to select "External Devices" from the menu to hear the audio

OP, you can use the apple usb cord and plug that in directly. If you don't have idrive your phone will show up as "ipod". if you have idrive with BMW Apps you will have more functionality

Thanks for the replies.

USB port is inside the arm rest (didn't know there was one in the glove box)

I don't have iDrive

I've tried the genuine apple lightning cable. That also only charges the device, nothing else unfortunately. iPod option simply says insert
