My Z4 emmiting grey smoke
Hi guys,
i noticed my z4 is emitting grey smoke (oil thing) when cold and it is disturbing me. I bought it with 7000 KM/5000 Mil from a dealer here and i guess it was not treated correctly by aspiring BMW owners.... What should i do? change oil, filters, .... any help? regards Samir |

I don't know what's causing the smoke but I doubt anyone could mess up the engine in just 5000 miles. Just being it in.

Mine started begging for oil at 3900 mi. Dealer told me that the turbos on the Z4 (didn't catch whether he was referring to specific versions) and on the 7 series burn through oil at a astonishing rate when driven "rigorously".

There's a spec in the service manual (I think it is 1qt / 3000 miles ?) and if oil consumption is less than that (i.e. takes more than that distance to burn 1qt), it is considered normal. |

May be something in the build
I know we all like to blame the owner or break-in procedures. but I had a friend who had a 1M coupe and it was going thru oil at a crazy pace. Eventually BMW had them do some tests. In the end they discovered the engine was build missing some of the rings on the pistons. He got a new Engine and extended warrantee.
While these things are built well, rare and strange things do happen from the factory. Watch the consumptions and keep on the dealer. My Z4 and 335i, and 135i didn't use more than 1/2 quart during breaking and little to no oil consumption today. Last edited by Wiles; 07-10-2013 at 06:16 PM.. |

From my recollection the ///M cars have a tendency to use a bit of oil. I know my friends ///M roadster uses about 1 quart every 5K miles or so. If you are using more than that (white smoke is a good indicator) then it needs service.
MY Z uses about a quart every 15K now using the factory maintenance schedule.
