How to differentiate the different stereo options?
In Canada, we have the choice of the:
1. std HiFi 11-speaker sound system, incl 2 subwoofers; or 2. optional LOGIC7 HiFi Sound System, incl 2 subwoofers. I'm not sure if these configurations are same in other countries. I have #2 and just like to confirm the speakers' locations/function: -1 tweeter near side mirror -1 mid in door -1 mid beside seat -1 mid beside feet (x2, so 8 speakers here) -2 subwoofers, 1 each behind seat -1 mid behind/between seats -1 mid on center of dashboard =12 speakers total Is this correct? If so, I guess that #1 and #2 configurations are the same except there is 1 less speaker for #1: what speaker is that? Btw, I noticed a long time ago 'Blaupunkt' used to have its name on BMW stereos, but now it's gone. I assume that these systems are still made by Blaupunkt and just curious why the name's gone? |

To Generalize
The base sound system that comes standard sounds like crap.
The optional sound system is nice, but is overpriced. These are personal opinions. Everyone's opinions will vary. Last edited by BlueZ4AZ; 08-03-2010 at 10:40 AM.. |

could someone with a good camera take pics of the 14 speakers, someone with 11 (tranquility) and someone just highlight the 6 from the base system?

I guess the European system is identical and is called HIFI system professional. The speaker setup is as follows: Doors: 2 mid range speakers + 2 tweeters. Foot well: 2 low-mid speakers. Center console: front 1 mid range. Rear: 2 mid range speakers + 2 tweeters. Center rear: 1 mid range. Behind seats: 2 sub woofers. The sound system has a digital audio connection with the D-Class amplifier in the trunk. EdP |

EDIT: according to your link, the std system only has 245W while the upgrade has 650, so that's over 2.5x the power. No wonder ppl are complaining about the std stereo! |

The way to calculate total system wattage is to specify how many watts per channel and then multiply that by the number of channels. For instance:
50w per channel x 4 channels = 200 watts total Of course, you can have more than one speaker per channel, so they don't rate the total system max output in watts per speaker, but watts per channel.

Dont forget to differentiate between Peak, RMS and PMPO power.
Plenty of audio manufacturers try to boost their image by quoting peak or PMPO power instead of the true RMS. I dont know but I would hope BMW sticks with the honest numbers of RMS. And before I get asked: RMS = Root mean square - roughly 70% of the peak power, the true average power of a sine wave output. Peak = the maximum amplitude of the sine wave power output PMPO = peak to peak measurement, basically twice the Peak value.

You're welcome. I'm curious, did you get a window sticker with your car? I ask because that would list your options or you should be able to get a complete lists of vehicle options from your dealer. It would be good to get the actual codes.

As a guess, I'd say BMW will publish peak output rather than RMS.

From the Dutch catalogue. 663 Radio BMW Professional, 4x25W vermogen, 676 HiFi actief luidsprekersysteem, 245W vermogen, 11 luidsprekers 677 HiFi System Professional luidsprekersysteem 650W, 14 luidsprekers I assume the number is the total maximum power of the amplifier. |
