The 355 has been one of my favorite Ferraris, and I'm kind of surprised some people are saying it looks dated. I think it has aged rather well for a modern Ferrari. The 348 on the other hand does look dated.

Between the two, my vote goes to the Porsche though. As some others have already said, the maintenance costs on Ferraris of that vintage and older can be pretty ridiculous. However, I have met a 348 owner who said the costs can be reasonable if you are willing to do the work yourself. This guy said he can actually get the car high enough on jack stands in his own garage to be able to drop the engine out for service.

Most people wont know enough about these cars to tell you its 10+ years old. The 355 and up most people think its new.

If you're wanting something to color up the garage, I would say either will do. IMO, they both are like a hole with no bottom if you intend to actually drive them. Oil leaks
(996) and timing belt scares with the 355 as well as costly tune-ups. Why not spend a little more up front for something newer with less maintenance instead of pumping dollars into something you will never get back?

FWIW the 996 Turbos did not have the RMS problems of the M96 engines.

The 355 just looks really dated, especially the lights on that car, why not sell the e36 m3 and upgrade to a new one?

blue book on the m3 is only 5k and i'm not selling it for 5k, that car has a permanent spot in the garage. that said, the new m3 is awesome but 2 m3s is weird. also this m3 is a mojo car. you know i once knew a rich ass guy who lost everything (millions) after he sold his m3. true story.

and it's a ferrari, "dated" is about as "dated" as a vintage lv bag.

No point selling the M3, agreed on that.

I fully disagree that the Ferrari is dated. It's a beauty.

And, to play Devil's Advocate, an older Ferrari could almost be a stronger enthusiast statement over a new one, particularly depending on the model. For sure, when I see a California, I don't think "enthusiast". I do admit to lusting after the FF though

There's a yellow 360 in a used dealer lot I drive by quite often, and I seriously think about picking it up. My main problem is going to be garage space. My X6M "DadMobile" is a keeper, no contest there. The i8 already has reserved a spot... The M235i is looking real sweet, as well... I think I have a car problem and I might need serious help.

Maybe it's just the places I've lived, mainly LA and South Florida, but Porsches are everywhere around both areas, whereas even a moderately old Ferrari is always a gem to see and admire. This is a no brainier for me, personally.

Yeah I hear you, there's no point in selling the m3, and it would be cool to keep; personally i voted for the 996, I guess it just looks more current to me.

If a dealer gives you some kick ass warranty, go for the 355 but I'd just be on my toes too much always worrying about what might suddenly go wrong with it. A 360 sounds like maintenance nightmare let alone a 355. I'd only get an F430 or 458 if I was shopping for a Ferrari. If you can manage an extra $15k, I think you could find a really nice 360 Modena which is way better and is more reliable.

got nothing against the newer ferraris, just don't want to spend that much on a trophy car (if i spent like that i wouldn't have retired at 34). plus, i don't want to pay income tax so my cash flow is restricted (coming in right under the annual exemption . i'll be damned if uncle sam takes 30%+ of my flow to blow it on obamacare... but i digress.

imo all ferraris are nIcE and they're all fast enough. i've focused on the 355 because it's cheap (i won't drive enough so maintenance should be ok if i find a good one) and i love 90's stuff. same reason why i like the 996 turbo: they all look about the same and it's a good deal.

for now i'll keep shopping the classifieds and wait for a good one at a good deal.

btw, nice car! what do you do and how old are you (if you're comfortable sharing)?
