Yeah so the average bike and the average car are all the same, with the cars doing a bit better for the most part.

The best bike (braking wise) and the best cars (braking wise) are in a whole different league.

my buddy has 2014 R8 V10 and let me tell you that car handles like dream! a biker has to be very skilled to our tun 11 second R8 with a good driver.

at those speeds, if an emergency junps out at you, and you need to stomp on the brakes in an R8, you might fish tail a little bit before you come to a stop.

I've only ridden a couple different types of bikes, but in an emergency situation at those speeds, if you grab a handful of brake on a S1000RR, you are going over the handlebars face first.

Point is that it is easy to brag about how awesome your car is compared to a motorcycle when that bragging is being done from the safety of a cage...

You're right.

It's all physics. Sport bike is lighter, but only has two small patches of rubber and only 3 small brakes to stop the small amount of weight. You're also limited by the balance of brakes so they stop quickly but don't flip the bike over nose first.

Cars are heavier but have four large patches of rubber and 4 much larger brakes to stop the car.

Obviously other factors come into play, (tire compound, brake rotor/pad materials, etc..) Which is why a light F1 car with state of the art brakes and huge patches of soft rubber tires stops so quickly.

I think the dangerous part of following a bike too closely is that a bike's brake light is very small and not very bright compared to what most drivers usually see. And while bikes don't come to a stop much faster than cars, the initial deceleration on a bike is much faster than initial deceleration in a car. With more weight in a car, all of it has to transfer before significant deceleration takes place. Once it's transferred, it slows rather quickly.

When you couple the reaction time to get from throttle to brake in a car you can easily be into the back side of bike before you know it. When following a car, we're used to seeing lots of brake lights and the rear end of the car raise up under extreme braking. So you get the extra time it takes for the lead car's weight to transfer to react to the situation.

We're not used to seeing the subtle weight transfer of a bike with small brake lights. So by the time you see a bike under extreme braking, you may already be too late, depending on your following distance of course.
