Alfa Giulia QV wins BBC Top Gear's "Best Cars 2016"

A lot of us car enthusiasts wish that Alfa does well with the Giulia so the brand can enjoy a re-emergence worthy of its historical past. Winning BBC Top Gear's "Best Cars 2016" will help a little ;-). Enjoy the read!

So idiotic that they're dropping the MT from the US with the slush box being the only transmission available! Way to start off on the wrong foot reintroducing yourself to the US market!

Talk about driving at and beyond the limit! None of us would drive at that limit and still bemoans the fact should have put a proper DCT or offered both the auto and the manual..both the DCT or MT would offer a superior driving experience. A slush box can be "acceptable", but is a complete waste in a car like this and is a big corner cut. Would take the 7 secs slower MT (which is 7 seconds slower in the hands of a race driver that none of us on this board can emulate on that track) any day of the week vs an auto. DCT would be great too. Even if they sold very few cars with MT, would have done a lot more for the brand. Very disappointing!

DCT are a bit overrated I reckon as the best automatics now are pretty close to their shift speeds without the low speed unrefinement. Who knows, they may offer the manual version in the US if customers demand it. They are taking the more business sense approach with this 1st year launch with the automatic version. Most rewiewers of the car prefer the automatic version anyway...

Everyone who's reviewed the car said that the auto is the better gearbox for this car, and no one has noticed that it was not a dual-clutch. Technology has caught up, I guess.

It's not always re shift speeds/smoothness when comparing DCT vs AT but the power loss due to the existence of a tq converter. I wonder what the figures are in comparison?

I think with the huge amount of power and torque of these cars and advancements in electronic torque converter lock, power losses will be minimal...

Still would be more loss w a tq converter and considering ppl are crazy enough to have fabric as door handles, every bit counts.

Point taken, and I will take a manual over a dual clutch or automatic any time, lap times are not as important as involvement for me ;-)

This is the weird part because Alfa already has a dct unit in the 4C IIRC. They screwed both the traditionalists and the tech guys by only offering the AT here.

It's still an alfa. There has to be a bad decision somewhere

But you're right, with the US nowadays probably having the biggest group of advocates for the manual transmission in performance cars (probably because having lived with automatics setting the general available trend for over half a century)

Seen this three times now. Once at NAIAS, another one wrapped in camo 2 months ago, and another last week on the road (red w/ black wheels). Seems like the true successor to the E90 that the F30 never was.

I believe The DCT in the Alfa is a dry clutch one not being able to handle the torque of the V6. On the other hand it could have used the wet clutch DCT from Ferrari, which is the best in the market, but I reckon Ferrari would not want it...

My impression, being italian and having seen some of those cars around:

Pros:
  1. It has a nice line
  2. It has a great engine (especially the quadrifoglio version, Ferrari engine)
  3. Quadrifoglio engine is more powerful than M5 engine.

Cons:
  1. It looks like a Bimmer
  2. Even if externally has a nice line, the internal are poor. Plastics aren't as good as those of luxury brands.
  3. As most of FCAU you could have a lot maybe spending less than other brand BUT details are poor. REALLY poor.

To be honest, If I would like a luxury brand I would buy a Bimmer, an Audi, or a Mercedes.
If I would like to buy an extreme luxury car (like M5) to compete with a Quadrifoglio, I would buy a Maserati, Aston Martin, Jaguar, etc. Too many competitors on same basket. You have to be a fanboy to buy an Alfa Romeo Nowadays.

I think the giulia qv competes pricewise with the m3
But you're comparing it to cars that are up to 2 or 3 times its price?
You cant give the giulia a bigger compliment!

I saw a max speed of 295 km/h in the video .
Our ///M3 S65 engine can hit 320 km/h ...

Need to say the Giulia is fast as well .

Standard S63 engine with speed limiter removed?? I highly doubt it even though BMW underrates their power. Based on the Cx and SCx, the M3 would need something around 600hp to reach 320kmh.
