E89 Z4 Black on Black

I took my car to my friends house and he plasti-dipped by rims black. I wanted to see how they would look before I went ahead and painted or powder coated them.. These are the pictures we took at his house. Also did the Sdrive emblems and the Z4 on the back. The front grilles, I painted matte black. I didn't want to spend 89 dollars on new grilles.

Frankly, for my taste, a bit too monotone. But if you like the "stealth look" I guess it looks good!

I just can't stand any chrome or silver. Even my interior silver trim bugs me! Next will be red brake calipers!

Black can work, but only if you go all out.

But then again, I think if you go for that look, you need bigger than 17s. Plasti-dip is a good way to see how "the look" would look, but definitely not a good long term solution IMO. This isn't the 8thGen Civic thread, or am I just being a snob?

Yeah, I need to tint my windows as well. Especially because my car is an OVEN when I have to leave it parked somewhere. I'm also going to be painting the rims on Friday, most likely. These rims will probably be gone within a year, I was looking at moving to 19"s as these are currently 18"s. They looked bigger when they were silver. I mean, I have sport package and I was under the impression that came with 18"s.

Those look like 290s, which are 17s. Based purely on the size of the sidewall, I would say they're 17s as well. A quick check on the tire will confirm this though.

Also, I'm not too big into the painting scene, but I'm pretty sure consensus is that while paint might be cheaper, powder coat is the preferred method and is more durable as well. Do you know what finish you are going for? Matte, satin, or gloss?

The finish will be matte black. I thought sport package automatically upgraded the wheels to 18"s?

Not sure if it's the same back in 2009 for the 30i, but I just took a look at the BMWUSA Configuration, and for the 28i, the Sport Package does indeed come with 18"s. They're hard to see because they're so small, but looking at your pictures I'm 90% sure that those are the 290 17"s. Do they look like these (Sport Package 18s)

or these,

Maybe the original owner got the sport package, didn't like the comfort from the 18s, and sold them and put on OEM 17s? If you PM me your VIN, I can run it and tell you what wheels it came with from factory if you're interested in knowing.

Very 2002 with black wheels, If you don't like the stock ones, and its quite understandable if you dont, I would go aftermarket or grab a set of 326s

I thought chrome everything was circa 2002?

I think black wheels is one of those things that you like when you're young and stupid (no offense, not a personal attack, I have black wheels ) and it really gives the car that aggressive stance that we the younger generation really go after. I think hypersilver wheels really have that clean and classic look, but looking at the direction cars are heading towards nowadays (which is the uber-aggressive) I think that's black wheels still have their place. If Porsche can charge $4,000 for a set of black wheel upgrade and people gladly pay for it, you know it means it's legit (and that there is a market for it).

Lets compromise... aftermarket black wheels?

Dude that's my car.

Btw looking good keepittrill. I felt the 19's were too small so I moved up to 20' and a different color. Got tired of the black on black.

I just remember seeing that picture a few times before, so I just Googled "Black e89" and it showed up. Looking up!

My wheels are exactly like those seconds ones, guess they are 17"s ): I really like the 296s, I might just move to those. And thanks guys! I really like what you did with your car, nkc. Cedar, I know exactly what you're talking about! I feel like everyone over 50 hates black rims, everyone under 30 loves black rims and 30-50 is full of mixed opinions :P I was looking at stubby antennas, but they're like 12-20 bucks. Is it really that cheap or are they all priced that low?
