Outside temp readout anomoly?

Anyone ever had this happen? Coming home from a drive to the coast here in Northern Calif wine country during a heat wave yesterday afternoon and ambient air temp readout started climbing all the way to 118 degrees by the time I reached home. At the same time, the oil temp gauge was actually reading slightly lower than normal. Turns out the temp at home was actually about 98 degrees; so the car readout was 10 degrees high!

Picking up the road temperature, as the sensor is somewhere near front lower side of car?

I agree. My temp reading is usual higher than actual. But its relatively close.

Filippo has a bad sensor and he's reading 122 in 70 degree days. That said if op had a bad sensor I would imagine it would be considerably higher.

The way it climbed from around 100 to 118 yesterday was really strange. I just sat there over the course of about 10 miles watching it climb another degree every quarter mile or so. Wife said it was reading 100 this morning when she was running errands in 90 degree heat. It's been pretty accurate till now. I'm beginning to think it may be a bad sensor. Where's Filippo when you need him?

My ambient temp sensor went bad, and read high. It would hit 122, but sometimes be in the 110-119 range. This can cause all kinds of issues, since the DME uses that information, as does the HVAC, as does the top control module. A $20 replacement from Febi resolved the problem. The sensor is located on the driver side, in front of the wheel, on the bottom black plastic liner. You have to remove the 8mm bolts from the plastic front inner liner, and under the car enough to reach inside. Once you can see inside, the sensor is evident.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on this. Can you provide a link to the part on Febi's site.
