Other than the jail time because he couldn't make bail, $300 is a pretty light fine for doing double the 70 MPH speed limit.

Anything over 100 MPH in CA and you can potentially lose your license for 30 days. It's a 2 point penalty, so you'll pay more for insurance for the next three years.

I got pulled over in my Z4 M Roadster about four years ago. I was doing about 80 MPH, traffic was pretty light, but there was a cluster of cars that I could see up ahead as I was going downhill, all in the left three lanes of a five lane freeway. The right two lanes were completely clear so I floored it for about 2 seconds, passed the cluster in the right lane, pulled back into the middle lane and dropped my speed back to 80 MPH. The whole thing took maybe 30 seconds. The CHP officer behind me on a motorcycle saw me and attempted to overtake. He said that he was doing 115 MPH and I was pulling away. I think my speedo briefly indicated 130 mph. He said he was doing me a favor and gave me a ticket for 100 MPH. I paid a $480 fine and a premium on my insurance for 3 years. Probably cost me over $1000 total.

$300 is less than what I paid for my last ticket 10 years ago and that was just for something like 75 in a 65. Then again in California the fine itself is usually only about $40 of that, it's all the special assessments and other fees tacked on that bring it up so high. Of course they don't think that's high enough so our esteemed California politicians are trying to make traffic fines based on income...
