Couple of questions about retractable hardtop

Hello everyone,

I just picked up my Z4 35is on Thursday. This was my first weekend with her and I noticed a few things that seem odd.

Yesterday, a red warning light appeared on the dashboard, between the gauges, that looks like the "top down" button. The top was up and the thing in the trunk was locked into place like it's supposed to be. The light didn't stay lit for long.

Today the led next to the "top down" button (near the ashtray) was flashing red. Again, the top was up. This happened just after I started the car. It blinked for a few seconds and then stopped.

On my trip back from lunch, I started the car and no lights or warnings. Is it a sensitivity issue? I looked in the trunk and the piece you pull down and lock into place was seated properly. I have nothing else in the trunk.

Thoughts?

I would head back to the dealer and have it checked out. (I'm assuming you're under warranty)
Sounds like a sensor is acting up if everything is physically in place and you're getting a light. If not corrected you could find yourself with the top stuck half open and then you're up a creek since you can't (shouldn't) drive it anywhere.

I called the dealer today. They said that when it gets really cold, below 37 degrees, that you will get a warning (red window light in the dash) because you shouldn't lower the top in freezing temperatures. Moisture/freezing issue. Makes sense.

I live in Chicago... yesterday it was 72 degrees and I drove around with the top down. This morning it was 32 degrees and I'm getting cold temperature warnings. :/

Oh no. There should be no warning light, unless you try to open/close the roof under problematic conditions. E.g. if you try to open the roof if it's colder than -10°C (=14°F). But not under the conditions you describe.

I think your roof has defective or misaligned sensors. This might even lead to an error message stored in your car that you allegedly have driven with the roof half open significantly faster than 5/20 mph (depending on your car's build date). This could impair any kind of warranty for the roof, so you should insist that your dealer addresses the sensor-issue asap.

Best regards

Mick

Don't mess around when it comes to roof issues.

Quick update - I had the car serviced and it was indeed a bad sensor. They replaced both rear sensors and now everything is working. No more false warning messages.

I don't know where the sensors are located exactly. The dealership took care of everything. The work was covered under warranty.
