What is the best...

Hey everyone, it is time for this group to share a little about our cars. Photos are always welcome so don't hesitate to show them.

Lets start off with a simple few questions/answers, but feel free to add to these as the thread grows.

1. What are some things that you like about your Z?
2. What are some things that you dislike?
3. What mods do you have? (show pctures when you can.)
4. Rate the Z against your all time favorite car that you owned (tell us what that car was (year/make/model))
5. And finally tell us a interesting story about your car if you have one.

Give us Year/Model/Color etc of your car.

I'll go first.

1. The thing I love most about my car are actually three things.
a. I love putting the top down and driving on the back roads with the sun beaming down on you and the wind blowing through my hair.
b. I love it when I find some twistees and can open the car up a little and swing back and forth through them.
c. Also in a bg city, with the top down of course, I love the sounds that reverb off the buidlings. The only way I would like this more is it the car was a 3.5 with the tuned dual exhaust.

2. The thing I dislike about my vehicle is... well I dont like the fact that you have to take the vehicle to the dealer to get the rear brakes and rotors replaced. I still havent seen anyone that can release the brakes by placing the vehicle in maintence mode. this really annoys me to no end.

3. as far as mods, they are all cosmetic.
a. Stubby antenna
b. Made and installed a clear windscreen
c. Side marker LCI replacements.
d. Swapped out the Angel Eyes to Led bulbs. This gets rid of the yellow glow and makes it white like the headlight.
e. Powder coated the rims to satin black. Hides dust from the brakes so that if I dont wash the wheels ever two days you cant tell.
f. Plastic coated the front grill black
g. Radar Detector Install
h. Windshield or window mount for a GoPro or other camera. Can be used on paint as well.

4. My all time favorite car is the Z, I think the one that comes next for me was a 79 Z28 that I owned many years ago. It was fast and mean.

5. Everytime my wife and I go to a resturant to eat. She makes a comment to me that the little girls are getting googly eyed over my car. Well, I dont ever notice but I think it is funny. I have also noticed that people around here will slow down or speed up in traffic to get next to me to look at my car. This is a little annoying some times when the top is down and they have a loud truck or something. I just want to cruise around at that point in peace but I do get it because whenever I see a lambo I usually tag to his rear bumper and cruise a while. Luv the sound they make.

1. What are some things that you like about your Z?

The styling, performance, equipment level and quality.

2. What are some things that you dislike?

The annoying trunk thingy that has to be in position for the top to retract.

3. What mods do you have?

Painted the front grills and roll bar covers black, stubby antennea, replaced the air box with cone air filters, SmartTop and most recently added a Cobb Accessport tune.

4. Rate the Z against your all time favorite car that you owned (tell us what that car was (year/make/model))

My all time favorite would be my 2007 Lotus Exige S310. It's a completely different experience of course. Pure, light, stripped, agile, loud, cramped and faster than you would believe. It's the perfect compliment to the Z4 which is comfortable, relatively quiet, well equipped yet still a fun car to drive.

5. And finally tell us a interesting story about your car if you have one.

Bought it three states away, flew in to pick it up and drove it home down the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Garage List
Not my Z but my brother's and we swap cars occasionally.

1. What do I like about his Z?
- The car looks sexy!
- Seating position
- N54
- It's not a soft top convertible. If his car was a soft top, that top would be dead in a few months because of darned tree sap.
- Feels manlier than other convertibles I've driven. (SLK, A4, 135is conv, and E92 conv)

2. What do I dislike about his Z?
- Rattles
- More rattles when the car goes over raggedy surfaces
- How long the hood feels behind the wheel
- DCT shifter: It's too hot to touch on a hot day AND it's stupid
- VERY low ride height and the car isn't even M-Sport!

3. Mods
- No real mods other than floor mats

4. Compared to my all time favorite car, 2008 CLK 63 AMG Black Series and/or CLK DTM AMG
- Sorry Z4 people, I love that CLK too much. Both CLKs are too sexy and beastly to look at. I'll also bet that the interior is better in the Benz than in the Z. They both carry V8's, so that has an edge over the I6TT in terms of sound. I've never driver either CLKs. So, that's as far as my comparison will go.

5. Interesting story with his Z: We were at an underground parking lot. I was driving and having fun with the overrun sounds. When I got off the car, a kid (with his dad) told me "your car is cool and funny because it farts."

Cool thread idea.

Not much to report here on the car front.. My 2012 35i is stock and I switched from 19s to 18s.

I take it to driving schools held at so cal race tracks from time to time and just enjoy the heck out of driving it with the top down at my 10/10ths. This has exposed deficiencies in the cooling system but overall the car does its job of putting a BIG smile on my face.

My current car is always my favorite (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten rid of the last one!)

hand brake

Hand brake electronic is not fun....
More fun in the snow when you can control the hand brake...

After the 328 and the 135, I can say that I love the Z4.

1. What are some things that you like about your Z?
The way it looks inside out. The power, design and tunability of the N54. The way it feels to drive, especially on power over-steer. The way it sounds (especially with DCT in S mode, 90C oil temp, and modified exhaust). How powerful the woofers of the audio system are... How it can be both comfortable and fun to drive depending on your mood. How it is stylish enough to park outside a 5 star hotel and sporty enough to make kids turn their heads.
I also like the whole experience of owning a convertible in a big, mountainous, sea-side-city where local pedestrians are still happy to say “wow”, point and smile at me every single day I decide to cruise around... and also I have yet to meet another 35i(s).

2. What are some things that you dislike?
Fuel efficiency (city) below 8km/l / 19mpgUS. Purchasing and maintenance costs, especially in China. And my DCT box leaked oil twice...
I wish the OEM 18” multi spoke wheels where 9” wide in the back instead of only 8.5”, giving them a more concave look.
It know it is the lightest BMW convertible on sale today, and more stiff, luxurious and safe than previous Zeds, but it would have been even cooler if it was made from CFRP and it weighed even less.
Oh and I hate how the leather wears in some places, and how the navigation screen sounds when I open/close it. And then there are the vibrations from the panels when playing acoustic or piano music...

Oh and I also dislike the fact that it takes more than 1min to reach +90C oil temps so I can begin to floor it haha. And then after I start to floor it, it takes less than a few mins to get above 110C...

The dials (speedo and rev counter) are a little boring as well. I mean the numbers and “background”, not the shape of the glass etc. Not that I like the ones in the 1M or 35is more, but something like what you find in an Alpina-BMW would have be nice.

3. What mods do you have? (show pctures when you can.)
ESS ecu tune (mostly running stg 1). Miltek de-catted mid-pipes for increased exhaust sound volume. Window tint on the passenger side. Non-rft 225/255 tires. I highly recommend all of it.

4. Rate the Z against your all time favorite car that you owned (tell us what that car was (year/make/model))
N/A The Z is still the roadster of my dreams here. If I lived in Monaco I might be feeling otherwise.

5. And finally tell us a interesting story about your car if you have one.
I think the time when I passed a random taxi with three girls inside and caught it on my dash cam is still the most interesting

Give us Year/Model/Color etc of your car.

I'll bite.

1. What are some things that you like about your Z?
This is my third Z4, after my '05 and '08. Obviously, I'm a big fan of the roadster set up and feel. The E89 is superior in many ways to the E85, and also different - not worse - in a few too. I love that I built it exactly the way I wanted and the satisfaction of that process through to delivery. I LOVE sunny, summer drives with my wife over great roads to undiscovered places.

2. What are some things that you dislike?
Not much. I don't understand why I can't send fully planned routes to my car, vs just destinations, wish I could. I miss the roomier trunk of the E85, but it hasn't proved a hindrance at all. I struggle to think of anything else.

3. What mods do you have? (show pctures when you can.)
  • Stubby Antenna
  • Tinted Windows
  • De-Badged

4. Rate the Z against your all time favorite car that you owned (tell us what that car was (year/make/model) )
I've owned a Ford ZX2 (type of Escort coupe), first-gen MINI, '05 E85, '08 E85 and now this E89. The E89 is my favorite thus far.

5. And finally tell us a interesting story about your car if you have one.
This car's too new to really have accumulated anything fun from the latter half of this past summer, but I do have a great story from my '05 E85. As I was driving through the city to pick up my then girlfriend (now wife), I came to a red light and found myself next to a car with two women in the front seats and a small, 6 or 7 year old girl in the back seat. The car was a coupe, and both passenger and driver side windows were rolled down. The little girl, seeing me in my car, strained up to the window, leaned out, and said in the cutest high-pitched kid voice ever: "Mister, are you marrrieeeddd?". This sent the two women in the front seats (and me) into a fit of hysterical laughter. I responded "Not yet!" and took off, as the light had just turned green. Cutest thing ever.

What I like: Still the best looking BMW in the line-up and looks good top up or down.

Don't like: No M version.

1. LIKES: I really like the retractable hard-top. Since I live in FL, the top is down everyday that it doesn't rain.

2. DISLIKES: I agree with "stickshift", there should be an M version. I have always been a manual transmission guy so I am still on the fence about the DCT but time will tell. I am not thrilled with the 292 wheels.

3. MODS: Tinted windows, stubby antenna, and, of course, the golf tee.

4. FAVORITE: My favorite car is a 2003 yellow Z06 Lingenfelter supercharged Corvette! It had 628 bhp and it required a change of underwear after full acceleration. The Z4 is a different animal completely. This is more of a refined cruiser to me.

5 STORY: It's not a story, but, at least, my wife doesn't call this car "Christine".
