I think it's interesting that Europe's largest premium car manufacture, a German Company, has been honing a design formula originally produced by the British: Front engine, long hood, rear cab as far back as can go, rear-wheel drive. It strikes a cord with people. I think it has a certain elegance and purpose (call it romantic, if you will) not found in the standard German offering.

One has to ask, why did you buy your 35i in the first place?

And, BTW, there's nothing really new in that article - same old sniveling about why BMW didn't make a hardcore roadster. Give it a little time, the way BMW is creeping up on former Z4 ///M performance levels, they'll produce one that is every bit as good or better than the former ///M coupe or roadster, it just won't jar your spine into your cranium.

BMW has been building that format in a roadster for quite some time.
Here is the 328 from the 1930s. I also saw the Z4 for the first time in that car show. I was hooked but didn't know it until a month later.

That 328 is sweet. I like the original belts holding the hood closed. And the knock offs and lightening of the wheels are nice touch, too. They were serious in those days.

When did you get hooked?

Here's some net photos of roadsters I fell in love with in the early '70's.

I assume you mean this one? The pics were from Vintage At the Vineyards. an annual BMW car show at Shelton Vineyards in NC. I think they had 300 classic BMWs last year ('85 and prior). Its held in late May. See http://vintageatthevineyards.com/ for more info. The CSL and Z4 were at vendor booths.

That is an incredible piece of metallic artwork, which unfortunately is from a bygone era. That canopy's supports are so thin they are almost whimsical. It's from a time when design meant everything, and designers were not impinged upon by the sterility of engineering for safety, fuel economy, aerodynamics, government control, and the need to situate 5.62569 cup holders and map pockets. The sad thing is that even if BMW wanted to build something like that today, they couldn't because it would fail miserably in a crash test. The crash dummies would be indescribable from the mangled metal and glass.

I will take it right now and be happy to die in a heap of metal and glass. It floors me just to see one picture of it.

I remember seeing one in light blue color some 25 years ago. IMO it is one of the most beautiful car BMW had ever built.

Yes, the Boxster is definitely the right choice, if you like a 12 year old body style and bland interior styling.

I disagree with all of your opinions. But, coming from a Porsche owner, they are to be expected, I guess. The Z4 does not compete with an MB SL, and will never be compared to it. The Boxster is the correct comparison for the Z4 as both are roadster sports cars, whether you want to believe it or not.
