High Pressure Fuel Pump HPFP. The N54 engine in the 35i & 35is use direct injection into the cylinder and thus need high pressure to overcome compresssion pressure (like a diesel engine). Most other fuel injecton gas engines inject the gas at relatively low pressure into the intake manifolds or cylinder heads outside (or behind on the ambient pressure side) of the combustion chamber/cylinder/intake valve.

Kinda sad, this issue started with the 2007 models and continues ... At least BMW has manned up to extend the warranty. One would think that the folks who claim to employ some of the best automotive engineers in the world could have designed a fuel pump that doesn't fail. I have knowledge of some folks who are now on their 3rd or 4th fuel pump.
