MWDesign | e89 Z4 "Slingshot" - Custom OEM Performance BBK x Adams Rotors

A big brake kit for our project Z4 was on top of our priority list and after months of research we decided to go with the OEM BMW Performance BBK but with our MWDesign twist of course.

Some may ask why we didn't wait for the Brembo BBK to come out. Simply put, we fear the massive Brembo BBK may be too much front braking bias and with tracking this Z4 in mind for next year (after a brief track day couple weeks back) - we wanted to make this vehicle a good street/track car. So balanced braking power was an absolute must.

With the help from the guys at Tischer BMW, we ordered the standard OEM Performance BBK for the front and a pair of replacement rear rotors as well.

Again with balanced braking power as a top objective, we sent the rear rotors to the guys at Adams Rotors for a slotted/drilled rotor conversion + black hub rust protection.

For an added customized touch, the calipers were brought to our close partners at Supreme Power Parts for a caliper repaint. We chose Lamborghini Grigio Telesto Metallic to keep the overall BBK look clean and also they blend with the overall concept of the vehicle.

Again thanks to Evan @ Tischer, Eric @ SPP and Adam's Rotors

Stage 1 is now complete, now these are on their way to us for the final touches - STAY TUNED.

We have distribution networks for HK as well and we are an authorized dealer for 3DDesign in HK.

We built a similar Z4 as our "Slingshot" project for a customer in HK last year.

Pop us a PM

Finally got the calipers finished just in time for the DTP show in Vancouver. These are getting put on tomorrow.

We have another set of custom Performance in the works, will be done by end of this week as well.

Do these bolt right up with the 135 bracket or do you need a custom bracket

These are the Performance BBK which were the yellow calipers originally, so the bracket is for the 328/330 which happens to fit on the e89 Z4 as well.

Lewis would technically be possible to mount only the bmw performance calipers on the existing stock 35i discs? What would you think?

I am not sure if it's possible but you get new rotors with the performance calipers kit anyways. So not sure what the reasoning behind mounting on 35i discs come from.

Please elaborate

PS: there is more to the bbk upgrade than just the standard caliper/rotor swap. The heat shield behind the brakes are new and it comes with a lot of replacement hardware.

No BBK upgrades for the rear yet but I am tempted to try the Performance rear bbk calipers. Been trying to cross reference with the rear brake parts used on the Z4 with parts used on other models, no luck. The Z4 rear brake assembly are unique to it's model.

The point being to retain the larger diameter standard 35i discs and save a few rubles by just buying the calipers (if sold separetly of course).
I have seen in person that particular calipers being fitted on an e46 m3 (!!! yep, not a typo) with csl discs. The brackets had to be machined/modified and the fluid lines and shields from the performance brakes were used along with the csl discs.
What would you think?

Btw it seems that the yellow calipers refer to the 135/335 platform, and the grey ones to the x20/25/30. Not sure if both share the same brackets, but it's most likely, as a local Z4 35i wears the grey ones.

There is one brake upgrade available for the rear. I would know, I just ordered it.

In short, the 35iS has larger rear brakes by almost an inch in diameter, around 320-something mm vs the stock 300mm.

As far as brake balance is concerned, I don't have the piston size of the OEM rear performance kit, so I can't determine what its native bias is, but the iS rear should correctly balance out the front calipers. Otherwise your brake bias will be off and your braking will actually get worse.
