Got a call from service today. Seems that they have received the "updated" software fom BMW and have "flashed" the computer in my car. They say it is ready and they will bring it to me tomorrow......... One week to do the update !! Sure hope everything works !! Also looking forward to not stalling anymore....

Got the car back this AM. They delivered it to me at the house and picked up their loaner.
All seems ok and none of the persomal programming or stored music seems to be lost. I will drive it several times over the next few days to see if the stall propblem has been resolved. I did notice that the screens fo each function in the iDrive appear to be different so I am not sure what other software changes have been made. Will be interesting to try to figure it out. Anyway, hopefully this saga is over... Until next time....

I have not spent a lot of time looking yet but the opening screens for each function are all differnet from original (more graphics for one thing). My car was built October 2009 for delivery December 2009. If yours is newer you may have already had the updates that I just got and that may have been part of the problem with their inability to do the upodate in the first place.....

Mind to post some pics? I'd be curious to see what is different too.

OK, they tried the software update on my car. It fixed the extended crank/rough idle/stalling problem..... however it FRIED my I-Drive.
They had to order a new computer from Germany.... 7-10 days. They let me pickup and drive the car in the meantime, however with no radio, navigation, or other systems. This is my 6th BMW and this car has been to the dealer more than all the other cars combined. |

From this and a variety of other threads, it seems that the dealers are doing more damage than the factory: frying radios, frying I-drive computers, etc while installing software updates...
Still, be glad the stalling isn't caused by faulty valve springs like on Lexus cars...

GEARS5,
I guess I have nothing to compalin about after listening to your current ordeal. I just had to wait 8 days to get the programming to work, after BMW Germany, did some revisions to the downloads. Anyway, for me, it looks likje the stalling issue is solved and everything else seems to work fine........

Also since the update, every once in a while when I start the car, I have very limited power, almost like the turbos aren't working. I have to shut it off and then when I start back up, everything is fine.... almost afraid to mention it to the dealer because they may want to do another update !!

Ok, so far the only real difference I see is the opening grpahics on each iDrive main area screen and the fact that several of the screens are indented to he right 1 to 2 levels. That is different form what I had prior to the update....If I find anything different I will try to photograph and share.

As of right now, it has been 3 weeks since I first took the car to be fixed for the stalling issue. Due to the update, the radio stopped functioning. They assured me that a new radio module would solve the problem. The module arrived on Saturday and today I got a phone call telling me that the software is not accepting the new module. To me that means that they have no idea what is wrong with my car.
Today I filed all the papers to proceed with applying the Lemon Law to this car. This entailed an express notification to BMW NA and to the Attorney General of FL. On Monday it will be 30 days without the car at which point the lemon law takes affect. Today the service manager mentioned the idea of replacing my car. Due to the monumental pain in the ass that this whole situation has been, I will be asking for a 3.5 instead of a 3.0. |

Some states allow a trade in kind, of equal value.

Apparently solved
I just had the software update today. I took it to South BMW in Miami. THey were clueless 4 months ago, so now when I mentioned the problem again, they knew what I was talking about. Today was very hot and humid (+90) and no problems so far, even in sports mode.

I am sure that they are VERY aware of the problem. If you read my diatribe above you will see why. All these experiences have been at south.

Kojack,
They are ALL the same not just south...... My dealer service manager AND the district BMW rep BOTH lied to my face about a seat belt warning light issue I was having in a 2007 335i cab when they said that they had never heard of the issue and no one had ever complained about a similar issue to them. THE NEXT WEEK BMW DID A 250,000 CAR RECALL FOR THE SAME ISSUE ON MODELS FROM 2004 to 20007 !!! No way you could ever make me believe that they NEVER heard about it before that !! Anyway, finally the Z4 is updated with the new sw for about a week now and it appears that the stalling issue is resolved and everything works as it should.... Till the next issue ogf course....
