100% stock 2011 35i DCT vs C5 Z06 Vette
Kind of surprised myself but excited and thought I would share this kill story.
Tonight was just another weekend where everyone local meets up with their "beasts" and go on highway runs. One of the cars being a Vette C5 z06 pulls up next to me on the highway. We slow down to about 20 mph, honk three times and right away I pull away by one car length. We went till about 150 mph, but I can see in my mirror that between 140-150 he was creeping up just a little bit. Needless to say I was a little surprised that I pulled ahead being 100% stock. End of the night everyone was questioning weather I had a tune or other modifications, as I reassured them and popped my hood to uncover a dusty compartment, but still I believe they were not convinced and left with the assumption that I had a tune in the car. Came home feeling good about my car, and can't wait to see what this thing can do with the JB4, DCI, and some downpipes.... |

in my limited experience with our e89, you have to get pretty pricey and exotic to keep up in a straight line with two little turbos and a DCT - the Z has serious real world acceleration

I knew the Caddy (this was the sport wagon) was one of the fastest USA production cars. When he went pass me the first time it sounded awesome, it was a beast with great sounding pipes. I checked when I got home, article I read stated it to be the 4th fastest, behind the 2011 Vette ZR-1. The 05 Ford GT, and the 2010 Viper. The Caddy will go 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, top speed of 190, stock. He was doing about 160 when I last saw him..... |

this is at 3/4 am... deserted rural area highway outside city limit... good radar detector and some good spotters so no worries.. This is not on a busy city highway with traffic, which is what i am assuming you guys must be picturing. You have not lived until you have hit the speed limiter on you 35
Do it responsibly and your own risk, not for the inexperienced. |

I am not chastising - just be careful as things happen really quickly at those speeds. I can't do anything like that out here just west of Austin, TX as too many deer, and, with my luck, I will smack one at 100+ the first time I try it.

Having owned two Corvettes prior to me owning my present Z, I'd say the driver of the Z06 was either a crappy driver or driving scared. I think my Z is fast, but it's not as fast as either of my prior Vettes.

I agree with this. I had both a 2000 C5 FRC and a 2007 C6, either of them would eat my Z4 for breakfast in a straight line or around corners. 300 HP with 3500 lbs vs 405 HP and 3100 lbs. I love my Z4, but I am pretty realistic about what it can do. Even with Dinan S2 I still would expect to lose to a C5 Z06.

However, the 35i has 332HP/332TQ. BMW claim of 300/300 is too conservative. 35i has DCT and launch control. All of this minimizes the performance difference between the 35i and the lighter C6/C5 Z06. If a 35i had a newer set of non runflats and the Z06 had old tires this would also minimize any performance differences. If the Z06 was driven hard, engine not maintained and had taken a beating the last 8-10 years, then that would factor against it as well. If the Z06 driver did not shift at the optimal time or shift quick enough then this would also be a factor too. Shift Timing and when to shift are to things the 35i driver with DCT need not worry about if driving in Sport +. More room for error on the Z06 drivers side.
