Tough times selling these cars. My local dealer has a dozen off lease cars lined up in front of the dealership. Prices are low and driving down the market.
I can't complain because that's how I bought mine but now I have to take a hit on sell price that I wasn't expecting. |

Your competition is other convertibles in the $30 - $35k price range. The Z4 is a niche car. Back in 2009 your car probably sat for a while on the dealers lot before you purchase it. The same is true now. It just takes waiting for the right buyer who will pay the right price, which is in the low $30's somewhere. There is a lot of crap out there in the high $20's and we know the 2009 Z435i is much better than those. |

Blue, thanks for the inspirational message.
I know it's a niche car and I'm selling at the wrong time of year (I'm in north Jersey and winter is right around the corner) but I don't want to sit on it until March or so. If you add up Nov.-Mar. monthly payments at $500/month, that's an additional $2,500 in loan payments. Add that to my asking price of $31,500 and you get $34,000. So, if I was to hang on to the car until spring and then manage to sell it for $34,000 (which is at the top end of $ for these cars) I'd walk away with $31,500. Therefore, I might as well sell for $31,500 right now. Just my logic and there are many ways to look at the numbers, but I also just want it sold sooner than later. Bill |

One other tactic to consider is selling your car on consignment at a broker with experience selling those kinds of cars and the clientele who is interested in it.
A friend sold his E36 M3 in Colorado in the dead of winter a year or two ago and got a substantially better price than what he was being offered privately, with very little hassle. Even with the consignment fee (which in his case covered the cost of things like a detail and marketing the car), he was better off financially. |

Blue, I'm 1.5 years into a 5 year note, so my monthly payments have a heavier interest load and I won't see the return you'll be able to get.
Nick, I'll look into the consignment thing. Sounds interesting. Thanks to both. |

Nick, I'm still doing my homework on consignment dealers but look at what I found. Good thing your friend didn't get stung.
This scam was reported by CBS Denver on June 15, 2011 Englewood, Colorado - A local car dealer selling vehicles through consignment is being accused of ripping off owners and buyers. Here's what happened. A local man consigned his car with a dealer in Englewood who agreed to sell his car on consignment for him. After the seller's contract was up in 30 days he went back to the dealership and all he found was an empty lot. His car was gone with all the other cars. The owner was left holding the title with no car and no money. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6655064 |

Good point, as the breakout of principle v interest is a factor to consider.

This is technically just a fancy method of stealing a vehicle. Hopefully his insurance company accepted the theft claim. |

FYI: the eBay auction started at $15k and went up to $25,300 with 12 bidders.
There was certainly enough interest, just not enough cash. Needless to say, the reserve was not met. |

I had a guy e-mail me via CarGurus yesterday asking if I'd "consider" $28,500 for mine. I considered it all right, for about a half a second and told him.....No. He's the type of buyer that is throwing a bunch of crap at the fan and hopes a piece sticks. I do not consider these people serious buyers. Last edited by BlueZ4Arizona; 11-06-2013 at 01:53 PM.. |

Your beautiful car is an "enthusiasts" car. Not only are you looking for a BMW buyer for a 5 year old/41,000 mile car, but they have to be looking for a m/t. The number of buyers just shrank considerably.
The upside is 2 years left on the BMW warranty, and the 3.5i. Hang in there, if the condition in person matches the photos, some buyer will want it, and at a price you are ok with. |

I have had people asking me to eat the $4200 MSDs to take over my lease (i.e. pay them $4200 to take over a great lease deal). I don't blame them for trying but I agree, hang in there OP. I know if I was personally looking for a E89 to modify with full bolt ons and really turn into a track toy then a manual transmission, N54 with non adaptive suspension like your car would be at the top of my list. Some leftover manufacturer warranty to shakedown any issues is icing. |
