Ok, I must be reading-impaired, I'm actually at the norm, 500-600rpms idle.

Anyway, a side question is sometimes when I'm idling @500rpms, the needle shoots up 100-200rpms for a second or two, and then back again: is this indicative of something? Need an oil change?

Could be the air con or heater or some other energy sapping device kicking in then cutting out again. Sounds normal.

How cold of a start is it? Drive it around for about 20-30 minutes to be sure it warm then report back.

Edit: NVM I didn't read that the problem was resolved.
