Just had the Z4 detailed

Posted this on M3 Post in the local forum, but thought it deserved to be here as well:

Last week, we took my wife's Z4 in for a detail. We bought the car used in June. It had 20k miles on it, was a nicely spec'd car, and we got a good price. The only problem? The previous owner did not take very good care of the paint and it had not been washed very carefully (almost certainly auto car washes, etc.).

I am careful washing my cars (two-bucket method, switch rags frequently, and will be adding a power washer/foam cannon and drier) but thought the car deserved a good foundational detail to bring it up to snuff. Phil of Detailers Domain actually recommended Street Dreams when I called to ask about the power washer and drier. We dropped the car off late last week and picked it up Sunday, as the car needed a LOT of work.

Dave is an absolute awesome guy and fellow BMW enthusiast and drives a mint-looking (no surprise) Valencia Orange 1M. He is super friendly and very, very knowledgable about BWMs in general and detailing them in particular. He really knows their nuances and demonstrated a surprising depth of knowledge about the things to look out for with each different shade of paint. The best part is that he is a "realist." He basically said that with the foundational detail and regular, basic washes (using good habits, which he was happy to advise me on), the car should look excellent year-round and would only need a much less involved "maintenance" detail once every 6-12 months, depending on how anal I am. That is exactly the sort of detail schedule I was looking for.

Anyway, I picked up the Z on Sunday and was blown away by the quality of his work. The swirls and scratches are probably 90% reduced. That last 10% represents the deepest swirls/scratches and would likely need a wet sand to completely remove. Maybe someday! The car looks awesome, both inside and out. It has more shine and gloss than ever before by a large margin. Most importantly, the wife is happy.

It was, though to be honest the wood was in pretty good shape relative to the exterior.

I "messed" mine up, to be honest this must be the most sensitive clearcoat ever used, I was using a supersoft brandnew microfibre cloth to dust it off from time to time (driving top down 99%) and man, it looks like somebody went over it with sanding paper.

Now what I wonderd how you got off the wood trim without cracking it? I´ve tried it very gently, it wont move a bit, and polishing it while installed will be pretty messy.

I got the very same color combo / trim like you

Sorry to hear about your issues. I don't believe Dave pulled the wood trim off to detail it. I will ask him what technique he used to avoid scratching it.

Thanks!

They are Lux v4. They look really good on the Z. Not as impressed on the M. I'll be going with OSS for the M3.

Hey OP, nice detail!

Any chance you are willing to PM me the detailer's contact information and cost? I have been looking for a good detailer to supplement my own cleaning efforts!

Nice! I need a really good detail also. Its so much work tho. We need another in depth write up. Last time I detailed the car, I was inspired by BMWZ4RIDER's thread. I didn't have his patience and attention to detail but I did get me to give my baby a little more attention than usual.
