How much above invoice would a 2011 model year Z4 35i cost?

Hey guys,

I am aiming to order a 2011 model year Z4 35i with M sports package in the very near future. But I am not sure how much realistically I can haggle on the price. First off, the car would have not be from the lot, since the production for the for 2011 model year just started. Any idea how close the final purchase price would be to invoice?

Hank

I'm getting the same car next month on ED and paid $466 over invoice with a dealership in NJ.

Hey thanks for the info. I assume the final sales price of invoice + $466 is with the 7% European Delivery discount applied? Enjoy that trip in Deutschland!

Yeah. It's ED invoice price plus $466. But you being in the Bay Area, I don't know...things are pretty pricey out there!

If there are no add ons this is a very good deal. This is over ED Munich delivery invoice, not US, right?

Forgive me, I live in the UK, so not used to this terminology.

So what you are saying is that the dealer gets $466 dollars above the cost to him of the car??

How on earth does that dealer stay in business??

This surely wouldn't cover operating expenses, let alone a healthy profit!

The dealer would have to do several of these deals a DAY to make it worthwhile, surely?

This is one of those unknown mysteries that is forever debated. Invoice is likely not what the dealer actually pays for the car. In the US, it is often used as the starting price for negotiating a selling price. There are actually 2 invoice prices; one for US delivery and one for European Delivery(ED). Many buy from dealers who offer pricing at $500-$1500 over ED invoice and take delivery in Munich. The advantage to the dealer on ED deals is that the cars do not come out of their allocation and they have no carrying or interest charges on the car as they are all "pre-sold".

I agree with you, no dealer will stay in business very long selling cars at $466 over their actual cost.

They make a lot more than that!
There is a "holdback" that the dealers get which is a couple of points over cost.
They also, when they can, collect dopey dealer's fees that most people are willing to pay.
When someone tells you that they paid $466 over invoice, ask them if they paid any dealer fees.
There is also service, whether in or out of warrantee.

A dealer does well, even if they sell the car at invoice. . .

Exactly! Most BMW dealers will deny there is a holdback but there has to be, otherwise they wouldn't be able to keep the lights on. That said, I am sure there are some customers that pay sticker price and then buy some of the packages like "paint protection" that are almost pure profit.

Garage List
In all honesty when you take everything into consideration I think you are doing good if you can get 3-4% off mfg list. I have dealt with 3 BMW dealers in 3 different parts of the country (US) and the story is usually prretty much the same.

I find it usually easier to go after other items like map updates and similar items covered during the first 4 years.

Like rmorin said, the dealership get money from BMW above the profit the dealership make on the sale to the customer. ED invoice is 7% cheaper because this is the amount BMW would normally pay to the dealership but since the car doesn't come out of dealer inventory, BMW passes the 7% on to the customer.
I know it seems very low, but I actually paid $466 over ED invoice, including the options I added on. The only fee is title and plates and dealer prep, but those are included in the cost I quoted. If you like the deal I got, call Jeff Sherman at Wide World BMW. He's a nice guy and is handling my ED very well.

Man, I wish I live on the east coast now, damn bay area and its highway robbery prices. So I guess will be lucky to just shave off 2-3k off MSRP huh?

I've typically done 7-7.5% on my previous BMWs. Still deciding if I will go the Z4 route or something different.

Haha, so you want a ED and a US delivery huh?! Driving the Z4 cross country would be swell, I will do it this year to mark my 10th anniversary in the US of A. It is my American dream to own a nice convertible.

That sounds like a pretty decent deal. Do you think it is because of the fact that you are financing which allows you to get the pretty low final sales price of 1200 over invoice?

Oh btw, does anybody know the invoice price of the M package? I know MSRP is 3500, but I couldn't find the 2011 invoice price PDF online anywhere, looks like people took it down?

Actually does your invoice include the MACO and Training/Service fees? The dealer I went to is charging $600 combined for those 2 fees.

No, I did the deal and then decided to finance. The 2500. gets credited to the dealership from BMW. I was very happy. I couldnt touch that deal in Chicago where I live.
