Is it worth me downsizing from 19's to 18's before running non-RFT's?
Or will the difference be negligable?

Dunno. Still have the stock 19" RFTs on my Z4. I'll let you know when I run out of tread and replace them with regular tires

That will be a long while as the RFT don't grip the road..they hop it!

Having PSS for the last 2 days has shown what a difference a tire can make.

the eighteen in wheels are a softer ride than the 19's, so it seems to make sense that the tires would be an even great help in that area, so you dont get a jarring kick back from bumps.

So, dumb question. But where does the spare go?? And I am guessing you would need to purchase a jack?

I think most ppl who go non RFT rely on the BMW assist phone # and tire mobility kit

I'm in the same boat as Pacemaker1000. I'm currently on stock 19" rims with Potenza RFTs and am seriously considering switching over to (stock-sized) PSS tires once the Potenzas are throw-away. I'd use the same rims and buy a Continental foam/pump kit for the trunk ($79 USD from Tire Rack and good for 4 years). I'd really like to hear feedback from someone who has personally done this.

I'm in the UK. I replaced my tyres with Goodyear asymmetric 2's non RFT.

I hit a pot hole which gashed the side wall about 4 inches, and the rear by 1 inch.
Pooring with rain, dark in the middle of the countryside, i said "Oh, Well" and drove home!
Half mile from home having travelled 9 miles the tyre came of the front rim.
The tyre sheared off leaving an inch of rubber around the rim, protecting it.
Suprisingly no damage to either rim, just fitted two new tyres.

Watching all those US programs about Police car chases gave me the confidence the car would get me home!

Putzo I did exactly that but on 18" wheels. Mobility kit and no flats x 2 years No regrets either as the ride is so much better. Although someone just posted regarding the 3G rft's and how they're not so rock hard anymore.

I see you went a bit wider than the stock size, which I wouldn't do, but that's cool. How did the ride change for you?

It seems like the 255/40/17 size isn't available for the PSS. You could try the 245/40/17 size if you were really set on the PSS

However, if I was in your situation I would go with BFGoodrich g-force Rival, or Bridgestone RE-11A, or Dunlop Direzza ZII. This would let you keep the stock staggered size, or maybe go to 235 front and 265 rear

The Michelin PSS is a nice tire but there are many other choices that provide more dry grip and better heat resistance, so I would personally go to another brand, rather than take the slightly less rear contact patch
