Tools required to change battery
It is time to change battery in my 2011 BMW Z4 35i S-Drive
I will be using "Carly for BMW Pro" to register the battery. I will pick up battery from BMW dealer. This is my first DIY. Except the tools given by BMW in the pouch, I don't have any other tools. What are the tools (wrench etc) required to remove the battery ? Appreciate your help. |

Having never changed a BMW battery before: Were there no other options besides the OE unit? If not, why did you choose this route? What was the cost from BMW?

Battery costs $282.81 and $120 to install and register the battery.
With BMW CCA discount, battery costs around $255. I read about other batteries that can be used instead of OEM. But I am not comfortable going that route. |

A battery is a battery - it just has to be the correct specs. Every car on the planet can use a battery that has the correct specs for their car. Every neighborhood car parts store will have a battery that works, will be less expensive and probably a better warranty. |

i was told by the jerk service guy:
the car won't run if you change it, the sudden change makes the computer think something is suddenly wrong because it monitors all the current in & out to modify charging. since i have no real-world experience with this, i (if possible) will buy a battery, pull into the side BMW lot, & change it myself... just in case. |

"the car won't run if you change it" This is not even remotely true. While the car does alter the charging profile due to age/specs of the battery, it does nothing that will prevent the car from starting up normally. The whole battery registration process you read about is about telling the car you have installed a new battery and what its news specs may be. It merely optimizes the charging of the battery - that is all. Many people change batteries without the registration process and have no problems at all. Even IF the charging caused the battery to not last as long, the price the dealer charges is often more than the cost of buying a new battery! |

I definitely agreed with u ..... i changed my battery with italian brand, no registration process and no problem at all . But what u need is external power source to hold up the car during the changing process otherwise it might not able to start . |

The battery registration fixes all issues with non OEM batteries as well. I have been running on a battery bought at AutoZone for two years now with no problem. Just had to pay 75USD to get it registered. Now that Carley is out i would have done that instead but there is no need to buy a battery from the dealer if you register it.

This is also not true. I changed mine without it. i de-engergized the system by removing the negative cable then positive. From there took out the old and put in the new. The car cranked right up. The only thing i had to do from there was call the dealer and make appt to have them register the new batt. But since he has Carley (she must be hot to have everyone after her like that) the update will be instantly applied after he plugs her in.

As for tools needed. I recommend a small tool kit which includes a crescent wrench. You can pick up one from Harbor Freight (if you have one near you) for like 20$. The set should include basic socket set. metric and standard, crescent wrench and maybe even a screw driver or two.
You don't have to have these for sure just recommended. You can get by with a pair of plyers and a crescent wrench. But usually what happens is you round off the bolts or if you use plyers you can make them look pretty narley. That is why i recommend the socket set. Chances are the bolt size is 10mm. but i cant remember.

At last ... I picked up new battery from BMW dealer, installed it myself and registered with Carly. Carly says it is successful. But when I try to do it again, message says "No previous battery registrations detected". I am not sure what's going on. I sent all logs to Carly and awaiting response. Did anybody see this kind of message ?

Why did you do it again if it was successful? If the battery is registered to the ECU then there's nothing more for the software to do.

Carly's issue ... even though it says successful, it is not. Carly asked me to change some settings and give a try which didn't work either. I used Rheingold ISTAD to register the battery and it worked. I am trying to get a refund from Carly. Some people had success with Carly ... but not me.

I used Carly for a while. Then I upgraded all my software on the car and then Carly quit working for most things.

Interesting thread here and pretty much universal to everyone who has paid a great deal of money to BMW dealerships for the battery as well the "registration". I have a 2012 Z4 2.8 and have not had to replace the battery yet. I was playing around on my dealers web site (BMW of Silver Spring) and on their parts dept. web page they directed me to getbmwparts.com, (powered by BMW of Silver Silver Spring). Price posted was $152 for the exide battery.
