An Almighty Bang!

Guys,

I seem to remember a thread on this a few months back, but buggered if I can find it...

As I accelerated from a standing start today to merge with traffic - I heard an almighty crack or bang noise from the rear of the car.
It sounded like a small explosion.
I thought I must have hit something but I can see no damage...

Does anyone remember anyone else hearing such a nasty noise on acceleration - and if it was a problem that needed to be fixed?

Yep, I've heard the noise, but I don't think we were able to figure out what causes it. Whenever I've heard it it's been on a rough surface with probably at least one rear wheel momentarily off the road. No idea why that would cause such a sound.

On the way home today I was behind a car that ran over a small, empty fruitbox-type drink container and that made a massive bang like a gunshot. Are you sure you didn't run over something that could have exploded or perhaps flicked up and hit the undercarriage etc?

I hopped out and checked the road and the car.
Nada.
I'll get it up on the hoist on Friday hopefully.
It still drives fine - no warnings, no symptoms...

I don't know what you guys are hearing but is it possible you guys don't realize you're hearing the explosion in the overrun? If you're revving hard to overtake and for a split second take your foot of the gas pedal you'll get that, in ferraris and lambos it's really scary and loud but in the zed is like a small bang.

I've heard the overrun. I actually try to make that sound all the time.

It makes a beautiful bwaarp sound.
This was louder, and was almost like a metal on metal bang.

And Mr Breeze - I dont live in the US.

Our guv-ment bought back most of our guns in 1997.
You pretty much need to be a farmer to have one these days.

I also drive an IS and I posted a message with the same symptoms more than a month ago http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=397890, since then no more "bang". I am waiting for a second occurrence before going back to BMW. Michael.

I still want to get it up on the hoist - I have logged an incident with the service department in case its a few weeks until I can get the car to them...
