Running The Engine In
Hey guys, i picked up my new 35i yesterday with 7 speed auto. Love it, its an amazing car!
Now i asked the dealer about running in, and he said to be careful the first 1000km. Dont floor it etc. Then later i asked someone else at the same dealer and he said, the car is already run in from the factory. I can floor it, should not be a problem. Can anyone confirm what to do? I want this puppy the last, and I am planning to chip the ECU after about 1000km. Probably JB3 as I think this is the best option available atm. |

I heard the same thing, some people say follow the break in period the first 1200 miles and some people say you should drive hard so that the car will run the way you want it in the long run. I just picked up my car on the other day and wondered the same thing. Not sure what is true? But I too would like to know.

Me too, the technicians I was asking agreed that I shouldn't bother about break-in and suggested just not to floor it for the first 1000km. My break-in though was 4000km limited at 3000rpm and lower - it was really difficult, I know- and then I had oil changed, yeap, the traditional old-fashioned way. You should be ok either way, I personally chose the peace of mind on that regard.

The car says to change oil at 15000 miles (US model of course...), but I think most of us agree that additional oil changes at our expense are actually investments in the cars longevity. My dealer also said to follow the 1200 mile break-in period driving no more than 100 mph and under 4000rpm. Whether or not this is required seems up for debate, but honestly you will have miles and miles of life left to romp on it...just give it some TLC in the beginning to be on the safe side. And if you are paranoid like me...get your oil changed after the break-in!

if it is a car you plan to keep, no-way should you follow the 15k schedule. 7k at the max. in other words, you pay for one, dealer does one for free, you pay for the next, etc, etc.
personally, i'll probably do follow a 5k interval (i do 2, dealer does 1, i do 2, dealer does 1, etc). why? i keep my cars for a very long time. |

Indeed, they say the Condition Based Service or CBS comes at 25 or 30000 km, but suggested to have oil changed in between, say at 15000km. The check control also sees oil and service generally at 25000+, but I insisted on the sooner oil change. I was told I was throwing just my money away but I feel safer knowing I treat the most expensive part of my car with affection.
