Anyone replaced their battery.
My battery is 5yr and 2 months old and I am wondering how much more time I can get out of it. I do not have any low battery symptoms yet but I am always weary of the battery dying during a Cobb map change. Would like to hear form any experiences about the battery life in our cars.
On another note, I replaced the battery in my previous 135i with a Optima Red Top battery and it worked great. Has anyone gone with an after market battery rather than buying the BMW battery. |

I am interested as well. Wondering if I can go aftermarket without throwing a code?

All you need to do a check the battery with a voltage tester. It should read above 12.3V. anything below - replace.

You need to test it's remaining capacity.. most auto parts stores will perform the test for free. I'd say once a battery gets past three years old it's on narrowed time. They can and often do last longer but they loose their storage capacity pretty quickly after a few years. Partly why the auto manufactures specify such large batteries. |

My Z4 battery was a rather extreme case. My Z4 had same battery for over 9 years.
Although the last year and a half of it i did charge it almost every month... If i did longer driving i did not have to charge it. But on many short trips to shops etc it did need some topping up. Symptoms i had: Sometimes keyless entrance would not work in the morning... in colder weather for example. And i had increased battery discharge message often with it. Eventually i got myself a new battery, replaced it and registered it with INPA i think. Anyway when registering this program shows you battery replacement history with dates etc. Mine was never replaced before. I was still on original OEM bmw battery from factory. Car was 9 and almost a half years old It still started evey time, drove fine. i just threw a charger on it when battery discharge message was shown and i was not planning on taking a longer drive somewhere. Now with new battery i havent used battery charger not even once.

I replaced mine with Exide battery... Check that new battery is AGM type, has same capacity amp hours and cold crank amp ratings...
Then battery registering is as simple as just telling the car it has new battery with a few clicks. if you change to for example different type, size and capacity then you have to do more programming to tell your car that it has this type of battery with this capacity and so on. Its just simpler to get direct replacement... Also if i remember correctly BMW oem batteries are made by Exide and Varta. Maybe there are more manufacturers depending on where on earth you live.

OEM batteries, at least in my experience (BMW and VW) always last way longer than aftermarket. 8 years would be an average number. I heard this from many other VW users (I was quite active on a VW forum when I used to drive one). Aftermarket batteries (I can't speak about all brands and product lines, but many) do tend to last just over 3 years, but it's not a rule, it might last over 5. So replacing it after 3 years with no sign of trouble would be a waste.

Just replaced my OEM 2011 since it was showing a discharge message on occasion and figured after 10 years it was probably on it's last leg.
Bought an Interstate at Costco for $175 (same AGM rating as original). Over 10 years and still going is pretty extraordinary! |

Still running original battery on my 2011 35i. I was going to be proactive and replace it so went to the local BMW dealership. The guy at the parts counter talked me out of it, said he has seen them last as long as 15 years!

Due to the integrated energy management (IBS sensor), you always will be able to start the engine, but the different control units may get shut down unexpectedly. |
