Wind deflector
Picked up a 2009 Z4 for the wife a few months ago and it's missing the wind deflector that fits between the roll hoops. Does it do much as far as changing the airflow at highway speeds? Didn't want to spend the money on a replacement if it's not really worth it. We usually just put up the windows if we're cruising above 70 mph if the buffeting gets too bad.

The factory one is a screen mesh. Anything that is a solid acrylic is an aftermarket item.
We purchased ours without any sort of wind deflector. I purchased the roll-hoop covers and mounting hardware along with the actual screen wind deflector. Installed it almost 2 years ago and have not removeThat it since. It looks great and makes highway speeds tolerable. Oh... the factory screen mesh is in 3 parts. You install a mesh screen inside the little hoops behind your head, and you install a screen between the hoops. That said, it is easy to snap out of the mounting point and put it in the storage bag and drop it in the trunk. |

The oem mesh one helps quite a bit. I drove around for like 2 weeks without it and purchased it after. It lessened the wind noise a decent amount, nothing too crazy but definitely noticeable.
The turbulence is greatly reduced which is the main part, having the wind smack you around gets tiring after a while. Girlfriend has long hair and it would be flying all over her face but with the deflector there was barely any movement. I like the oem mesh one cause it lets a tiny bit through still which adds to the experience, and looks better IMO Very easy to remove and store but I never take it off. At night it's a little harder to see out the back but you get use to it |

The first wind deflector I got was a clear plexiglass aftermarket one that could be strapped to the roll hoops. I used it for awhile, but wasn’t really happy with it because I still got a fair amount of wind buffeting and blow back. I finally broke down and purchased the expensive OEM mesh wind deflector and i must say i am much happier with it. Not only does it look better aesthetically, the porous nature of the deflector actually allows air to blow through and doesn’t bounce it back into the passenger compartment. I immediately noticed a marked improvement. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend a solid wind deflector.
