Rear Inner Liner of Wheel Housing
I recently purchased Michelin Pilot Super Sports, 235 on the front and 275 on the rears. My car is lowered with KWV3's and my rear tires were hitting the outside of inside liner when I took off quickly and when I hit bumps. My tires also had some wear on the outside edges so I decided to remove about a 1 inch piece at the top of the liner. I am not rubbing at all now but I was wondering if it is a problem if water gets behind the liner. I imagine that some people just remove these liners to gain more room but I don't want to find out that I have a rust problem 3 years down the road.
I guess that I could have raised my car a little but I really like the height that it is sitting at. I could also remove the liners and spray an undercoat on the metal behind the liner but I am not sure if this is necessary or not. Any thoughts? |

I have the same problem running kw v3 and 19 inches rim with yokohama. Eventually the inside of the lining wore away and teared a hole. I don't understand why this is not an issue on the 3 series with the same rim and set up.
I may bring it into the shop to see if I can strip away the lining more neatly instead of having a hole there. Is that what you did on yours? The rear fender panel is aluminum. I don't think rusting on the inside is a huge concern. But it also means you can't really roll the fenders, at least not safely without paint chipping.

I took a cutoff tool and removed about an inch of the liner away from the fender. This gave me plenty of room and I don't rub any more. I then used a file to clean up my cut and it looks very neat but I was worried about getting water behind the liner. I will post a pic later.

water behind the liner wont hurt anything. Water gets there anyway even with the liner in place. If you want to fix it so that there isnt a hole then remove the liner and use figerglass and epoxy to mold a new cavity for the wheel to fit then spray paint it to match and reinsert. that should do it.
