Rear Deck Rattle

I have a rattle coming from the rear deck, on the left corner (as sat in the car). My car is RHD.

I've gummi'd every piece of plastic and rubber, but its not resolved it. Has anyone else had any rattles on the rear deck/window area?

I should add; its when I go over rough tarmac, like a loud click/tick. Happens on manhole covers and the like.

I've had the roof up and deck open checked all hinges, etc. Grease is apparent on mechanism where the dealer did a bit of noise tracking last year. No doubt its because its got cold here now, but its driving me nuts when the rest of the car is reasonably quiet.

Do you have the adjustable dampers? I am not 100% sure but I think mine make noise when I am going over rough tarmac also.

I guessed this was just normal noise due to adjustments being made to try and compensate for the road surface.

Same issue. Seems like the dealer applied grease to all the joints and I even saw what seems like a silicone lube on the bottom rubber trim but it does not help.

That darn lube attracts dust while driving with the top down :grr:

Yes I have the dynamic/adaptive suspension. I don't think its that though as I'm hearing it from one side only. A 'clack' like sound over certain road surfaces. Given its a folding top, it all makes a slight rubbing noise if I get on really rough roads, but the clack sound on rough drops is taking some finding!

My 09 35i just developed the same sound in the same spot about 1 week ago.

Mines still there... trouble is there's no room for a passenger to swing around and track it down while I drive, not like they can sit in the back... I really need to find it as its driving me nuts...

Its tricky that.. I can't hear it with the roof down, but I can't tell if that's because its now drowned out by external noise.

Besides, its 0 degrees C here at the moment, so roof down time is limited

Hi ! I know its cold, but the heater on the car is brilliant in cold weather if you set it correctly(car fully upto temp), no shirt sleeves but it is a pleasant place to be!!! however back to your noise, if you have a passenger then you will have more chance of localising, at least to say if it there or not with the top down!!!!

You probably already tried this, but did you open the pass through? made sure it's not the ski bag or the shelves in there? If you can, maybe open and close it from the trunk as well (just be careful, vaguely recall some people reporting that they broke the locking latch mechanism).

It's the headliner.

I've not opened the pass through, I'll consider that... the sound however sounds right on that flat plastic deck, the bit the roof back area sits on. Its gone a bit quieter since the temps have dropped, but still there.

Not the headliner, I've had that off to find another noise and fixed that Thanks for the suggestion though.

I have the exact same thing.
Sounds terrible. more like a broken weld or joint when i go over small bumps like speed bumps. having it checked shortly.
Couple this sound with the terrible RFT ride over any lane markers.

open your top halfway, align it correctly (with your hands, its easy) and close it again. The noise should go away.

I'm not entirely sure what you suggest we 'align'? Are you suggesting we apply force to the mechanism to bend it into place (that's not going to happen)?

You dont need to apply force, its very lose on the joints on its own. Just need to make it sit correctly. Nevermind, get your car to BMW

Deck rattel

I had a similar noise when I picked up my car. It took 2 trips back to the dealer. The first time they did not get it correct because I drove about 20 miles before I went over something that would make the noise. The second time they had the car for 2 days chasing the noise admitting that they could hear it too. If I remember correctly they told me it was an vertical adjustment on one of the pedestals that support the roof while up. I guess they raised it up to put more pressure on the roof when up and the noise went away. Now if I had only asked them to point out what they adjusted, I could be of more help.

I've had the roof aligned by BMW already and that's pretty good. The sound I'm getting is not the roof but the deck itself. I have made some progress, but I can't be certain. I note that when the roof tray is locked in position (down) the sound occurs rarely, with the roof tray in the up position for maximum load space in the boot, the sound occurs more often. So I'm now thinking that what I thought was deck noise, is likely something in the boot mechanism that I can hear through the deck. All quite hard to tell when driving or indeed while trying to get in the right position in the car as there's so little room.

I've identified some movement in the roof tray (see image) and I'm wondering if this might be the cause. Can someone else check the pivots on their roof trays and see if they too have this gap?

There is no gap or movement on the left pivot, but there is around 3mm on the right pivot.

I found that the plastic roll bar covers creak. Took a long time to figure it out as you can't exactly climb in the back seat while on the move. Try applying pressure to various parts of the plastic while experiencing the noises.
