I installed a pair of MTECS when I got my car and, honestly, I'm not sure I prefer them over stock. They're definitely not yellow, obviously, but they're not as bright as I would have hoped. I was actually thinking of putting them up for sale and may still do that, so anyone who is interested keep an eye out for them in the for sale section.

I have the cheap Mtechs and I feel a big improvement over OEM because about as bright and definitely white instead of yellow. But they dim when headlights are on and become yellow then and look very similar to OEM. I am trying to find a code that will keep them bright when headlights are on...

And as everyone has said, they're the least expensive alternative to the (what I think are) overly yellow stock bulbs.
I may look into the pricier LED alternatives but in it ranks low on my list of things to get such as a combox retrofit or DCI or something else I'll personally get more enjoyment. I'm looking forward to seeing what results people get from the (new?) 4-LED light BMS is selling for $130. |

Received the MTec bulbs already. If I figure out how to install them quickly and easily, I'll try and have comparison pics with the OEM lights by tonight.

I can try and post pics but I am just going to wing it. From this diagram, #6 should be the angel eye bulb. Plus I can't film it anyways, I'll be doing it alone and I really can't record and do the replacement at the same time.

Just installed the MTec and it was the easiest install ever. Here's a quick DIY with pics from the driver side:
Step 1: Locate the plastic cover for the headlights. Remove it by twisting it and then pull. Step 2: Once the cover is off, locate the bulb, not very hard to find. Step 3: To remove the bulb, twist it downward towards the center of the car (to the left from drivers side, to the right of passenger side). There really is only one way you can twist it anyways because the other way is blocked by a screw so you can't make a mistake. Once you twist it, just slowly pull it and off they go. Step 4: Remove the OEM bulb by releasing the clips on the side (circled below) and then replace the new bulb. Step 5: Place the bulb back the opposite way of how you removed it and you're done. Here's a comparison pic, the bulb does become yellow once the the headlight is on but it's good enough for me. Really difficult to get a comparison pic where, it turns all blurry so I had to take a pic of each just combined them. The MTec are definitely better than the yellow OEM and you can tell how much better it is when the light hits the wall (sorry no pic of this) and it is brighter. OEM on left and MTec Super Whites on the right. Well, hope that helps.

thanks for the pics, it is pretty easy to swap bulbs but always helps to be familiar with the environment before hand

Excellent DIY. I'm all for starting a DIY sticky on the homepage. RFX45, would you be the first to ask the administrator to get ball rolling on this and use your DIY as the first posting?

Excellent DIY. When I see it illustrated like you've done, it seems pretty easy. But without your DIY, trust me, I would have screwed something up. |

I believe the power output does decrease hence the AE dims down. I think that is why the LED version doesn't dim down because they take in less power so the decrease in power doesn't affect it? Or some LED set-up separates the power so the power output doesn't get interrupted and why it cost more.
I contacted a mod about it so we'll see where that takes us.

I tried but I couldn't capture it correctly. It becomes like a big blurr of light, you really couldn't see anything other than just a bright shining light. I'll try in another angle tonight but don't hold your breath, my camera skills suck.

If you take a picture with a lot of outside light then it will help to show to the angel eyes better. if the entire picture is too dark then the angel eyes will be overexposed and be a blob of light

Ahhh, so the key is to have more lights? I was thinking the opposite, that I need more darkness to see the lights more clearly. Made sense in my head. I'll give your suggestion a shot.

rfz45, You mention above how to remove the bulb. I've tried twisting it as you say, but it turns really hard. I don't want to force anything and break something. Did yours turn hard too? I tried both sides and neither bulb would release. NEVER MIND! I WASN'T PUSHING THE BULB IN AND TURNING IT AT THE SAME TIME. UNFORTUNATELY I BROKE ONE OF THE LITTLE PLASIC CLASPY THINGS ON ONE SIDE OF THE PLUG. I'M GUESSING THE OTHER ONE SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO HOLD THE BULB SECURELY.
