New Z4 also sharing the N54 engine?
After looking at the BMW website, it now seems that the new Z4 will be the next bimmer to have the N54:
http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...vehicle/engine Any thoughts on this? I believe that now this will be the quickest of all of the bimmers with the n54 platform. |

Potentially. A lot has to do with the gearbox ratios and final drive ratio choice BMW makes. Nonetheless it'll perform in the same ballpark, but will probably be much more fun to drive as it is a 2-seat sports car afterall. What really remains to be seen (or experienced) is the driving feel and most importantly steering feel/feedback. I would tend to believe BMW has done good work there and it will be a fun car to drive, even if the car suffers from being overweight. BMW has proven with the new M3 they can make a heavy car feel much lighter and still deliver a great driving experience.

What weight do you think the Z4 35i will be?
The reason I ask is instead of either a fabric roof or even a solid metal roof the new one has a folding metal roof with it's mechanism which all add weight. In the M3 the folding roof's weight increase is 230kgs and though the roof size on the Z4 is smaller it should still cause an increase of at least 150-160kgs. The old Z4 3.0si had a weight of 1395kgs and the new 35i should probably increase this by about 50kgs (roughly the difference between 330i and 335i), so without any roof change the old Z4 with the 35i engine should weigh approximately 1445kgs, the new car is slightly bigger and with more safety equipment it will probably weigh a little more, increasing that 1445kgs into a realistic figure of 1465kgs. Hopefully you are still with me by now. So to recap, I reckon that a new Z4 with the 35i (N54) engine if it had a fixed roof would weigh about 1465kgs, now add the estimated weight of the folding roof and mechanism of 150kgs to the 1465kgs and you end up with a new Z4 35i weighing approximately 1615kgs. It's hardly a light weight or the lightest car to use the N54 engine. |

No offense, but just look at the information pasted last December in the sticky. It is all there.

1565kg 6MT 1585kg DCT So your estimates are a little off, but close at least for the DCT, the 6MT won't be that heavy. That being said, I REALLY like how this car looks, but I will wait for the 3200-3300lbs non-vert version.

Apart from that it looks to be a really nice car. P.S. I can't understand how they have reduced to the weight of the roof by as much as they have compared to the M3's folding roof, that is incredible. |

Seriously? The fact that it's a two seater vs a four seater might just have a lot to do with it, oh and only having 2 panels vs 3 in the M3.
