Buying used, skipping warranty
Looking at a 2013 2.8i w/58k miles on it from dealer, warranty quotes are a bit high for my liking, would a dealer pre-purchase inspection be good enough to check out the timing chain issue and anything else? Any other tips when thinking of buying, whether CPO or PP? I like what I hear about that turbo engine in terms of performance.

So I'm guessing the car is not a CPO because you're not buying from a BMW dealer??
My experience may offer you some ideas. My wife bought a 2013 from a Benz dealer in 2014 so there was no CPO warranty on it. We ran out of factory warranty in Feb of last year and I decided not to purchase an extended warranty from BMW (or anyone else). Before the warranty ran out, we had the car inspected by a reputable indie that we planned to use (and in fact are now using for maintenance) and they came up with a short list of about $2k worth of work that needed to be done. Took it back to the dealer and they corrected everything and sent us on our merry way. No issues since then other that an oil change. The dealer had given the car a going over prior to our own inspection and had given it a clean bill of health. So much for dealer inspections! By the way, the $135 the indie shop charged us for the inspection was rebated to us for the first service they performed on the car last month. |

Correct, buying from Benz dealer. Going to take it to indie and see what they say, but car looks/sounds good. Warranty quote was like 10k for 5 year/133k miles. OTD looks like around 27k, will try to get a bit taken off, kbb is around 23k.

My credit union offers a 4 year/48k additional mile warranty for about 4k, that sounds a lot better, I had her email me the specific terms so I can show the mechanic, what should I look for specifically to ensure they cover the timing chain issue or anything else major/specific to this car?
