Are 35iS brakes actually larger than 30i brakes?
I've tried to figure this out definitively using the bmw websites but haven't been able to:
Are the brakes on a 35iS actually larger than those on a 30i?

Thanks for posting this! I saved it this time. I was wondering what the brake sizes are. I am planning to switch to Brembo brakes sometime next spring.

Thanks, but do you have such a thing that compares the 35iS with the 30i?
I need to buy new winter wheels and I'm being told stuff that I have trouble believing about what will fit and what won't. For example, I've been specifically told that "there is no possible way" my old wheels will fit even though they spent several months on the car last winter with no problem. Tirerack.com lists a number of 17" wheels for the 30i, and I'd much prefer to use smaller wheels and have more sidewall for my winter tires. However, they insist the smallest that will fit a 35iS is 18". I need to use the old winter wheels on the e85 Z4 for which they were bought. Thus the question about brake sizes.

I'm sure everyone can see why I've been unable to find the definitive answer to this conundrum, since there are multiple supposedly correct answers floating around. To make matters more confusing, since Tirerack lists 17" as an option for 30i and 35i without the sport package, that doesn't make sense unless a) they're wrong or b) 30i and 35i base share a brake size and 35i Sport Package and 35iS share a larger brake size. However, bmwusa.com doesn't say anything about brakes in the Sport package.

I cannot find anything that states that the 35is has larger brakes than a 35i. In fact to the contrary. Everything that I have ever read states the brakes are the same for both models. Am I missing something?

The 30i and 35i front rotors are 330X24 and the 35is rotors are 348X30. Look it up on realoem. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...75&hg=34&fg=07

It's not a point of discussion, again, just look up the part numbers yourselves if you don't believe me, or go ask to cross reference the part numbers at your local dealer's parts counter.
So one more time, on US Spec cars, 30i and 35i have the same brakes all around. The 35iS gets larger brakes (calipers and rotors). On Euro cars, both 35i and 35iS get the larger brakes, for a myriad of reasons not relative to this thread. How do I know? Well aside from being able to read that USspec 30i and 35i share the exact same part numbers for both the disks and caliper bodies, which is furthermore different than the 35iS model, I just went through and upgraded my factory brakes on my '10 USspec Sport and have the calipers + rotors sitting in a box in my garage. If that wasn't enough, I actually bought the Euro/35iS rears as they are larger than the 30/35i 300mm rears and have held both in my hand. Key Point: Lay literature can (and is often) wrong, likely misunderstanding from the difference between euro and us-spec cars. To get the real info, take 5 minutes to browse the BMW part catalog. Its free, and online. Quote:
In full on US SPEC cars: 30 and 35i: 330mm front/ 300 mm rear disks 35is: 348mm front/324 mm rear disks Both use different calipers as well. This is definitely true up to 2010. I have not browsed the 2011+ part numbers. Last edited by Auraraptor; 10-16-2011 at 07:40 PM.. |
