Why do they do that - simple, they make more money from the higher spec cars when they sell them. BMW try to set up the desire to have more. More engine power, more gadgets, more luxury... And the margins on the extras are far greater than the margins on the base model car.

Over here a 23i with no options is about $90K. A 35is with no options is $140K.
Is there really $50K worth of extras. Of course not. Its the same shell, same electrics. And a very profitable margin for BMW.

So the smarter buyer goes the way of the old real estate addage.
"Buy the worst home in the best street".
All good points except........I've never purchased an option for a car or even a car itself because the manufacturer create any kind of desire for me. I created my own desire for the DCT after test driving a Z4 with it. All BMW's marketing did was inform me they now made a Z4 with the DCT. IF I had NOT liked the DCT, then there is no amount of advertising and articles saying how great it was that would have made me purchase a Z4 with it.
