Thanks for the info. I took it in and they did do a software update. I have not experienced the problem again since then. I'm still wondering if it's normal (on a 2009 Z4) for the RPM's to NOT increase when the A/C is turned on? I have never had another vehicle that did not have an associated increase in engine speed when the A/C compressor came on... I thought this might be associated with the software problem. No it's normal. BMW's have taken care of this for many years. They make the rpms change right when te compressor engages to keep the isle stable. The compressor in your car is clutchless, so it's even smoother than before. Germans like to keep this consistent and smooth
