Having slept on the problem the next theory possibly is a problem with the dampers bottoming out. The rear drive assembly seems to be bolted via rubber bushes to body so no noise should be transmitted there.
The dampers are the only parts with any solid connection. If the body work is so stiff that when one rear wheel crosses a hole the wheel hangs in mid air so to speak and damper bottoms out.
Could be the springs are so strong that the rear is riding high almost to the point where the dampers are almost at full extension.
So today will load boot with paving slabs and see if that makes a difference.
Also may try disconnecting the dampers and try bouncing the car then a drive over test rut.

Well tried the paving slabs, still no difference. Located noise on righthand side under boot compartment.
