You have to raise the car off the ground to relieve and tension in the chassis. Once the car is relaxed the bar will fit. This is how we installed mine w/o modifying the bar.

Thanks. I had considered this as well, but realized I would not be able to remove the bar for some under the hood work without first lifting it off the ground.
