As far as Golf vs. Type R, I would go Type R - much more fun. If you don't need all wheel drive it's a no brainer. And if you like money, also a no brainer - you won't lose much, if anything, on the Type R.
The Golf R also has excellent value retention and they cost the same new. I'm not sure I'd say it's more fun either, it's a much larger car with less power, less tuning potential and they tend to get a lot more attention, whether that's good or bad is up to you.
