Carplay - Now if you buy the dongle from them then you shouldn't have a problem, but I thought I was being clever and bought a generic version from eBay, this may or may not be the problem I'm still investigating this issue. Also I'd previously installed a USB socket (as per attached photo) for charging my phone in a neat install within the glovebox, so I used this to connect the screen USB cable, so this could also be the problem, I now need to get back out to the car (when it's not raining) and take the glovebox out again and check all theories.
On a plus point I do have Android Auto working perfectly without a dongle. There's an app you can get from the Google Play store that mimics Android Auto and works as if it's the original, touchscreen and steering wheel control compatible as well As I'm and Android user this is a must for me, but my wife can also drive my Z and she is an Apple user so I need to have both working.
Carplay - Problem SOLVED
Buy the standard generic Carplay dongle (the white one)
Then download this link >> http://121.40.123.198:8080/zbox/zbox.apk << to your computer, load onto a memory card, place in the Android screen, access via ES File Explorer and run the apk. This loads ZBOX onto the Android screen, open the app, plug in the dongle, plug in your iPhone cable and your iPhone following the instructions on the screen and phone.
Job done, next time you get in your Z4 and plug in the phone it should open Carplay up automatically.

Android Auto - For some reason this app is not available for this screen from the PLay Store - Problem SOLVED
Go to the play store and load Headunit Reloaded (there is a trial version to check it works, actual version is about £/$5). Once loaded open the app and then plug your normal phone cable into the USB socket from the screen, then plug your phone in (DO NOT use the dongle**). Follow the messages on the screen and on your phone.
Job done, next time you get in your Z4 and plug in the phone it should open Android Auto automatically. (Headunit Reloaded information courtesy of Michael Duffin here in the UK)

** EDIT:- Please note that you CAN use the dongle for Android Auto, but you'll only have the useable part in the centre of your screen, not full screen. Personally although Headunit Reloaded costs I prefer it being full screen even though it's stretched a little. At the end of the day if you want both Carplay and Android Auto as options then you'll buy the dongle anyway so try it with the dongle and see how you go, then if you'd prefer to see full screen then try Headunit Reloaded Trial version first. Obviously if you don't want Carplay then just try the H-R app and see how you go
