Best bet is to go test drive a couple of cars and see what you like.
I drive an F30 and love it. I'm not a big-car kind of guy. Even the F30 is ALMOST too big for me. I was lucky enough to get a good deal on a F10 rental this past weekend while I was out of town and it confirmed that I am very pleased with my F30. The 5er is a great car, but doesn't fit my lifestyle. I don't think it'll bode well with the college lifestyle either. Unless you're going for image, the F10 may seem "more luxurious".
