I have the hum, too. It seems to come and go. I talked to the SA at the dealer and he tells me that BMW NA's policy is that in order to have the in-tank pump replaced under warranty, the diagnostics must show a code (same basic policy applies to the HPFP). From what I've heard, the HPFP can really start to act up (long cranks) before the car throws a code. Not sure about the in-tank pump.
